Emby Theater silent upgrade

I have noticed several times when I attempt to start Emby Theater it will appear that nothing has happened.  There is no splash screen or any other indication that I actually launched the program.  So I will often double click again and again, trying to get the program to launch.

After this happened to me several times over a period of time it became evident that Emby Theater was actually downloading and installing an update to itself.  On a desktop machine the update process would usually complete within a minute, so I got used to just waiting for a couple of minutes if Emby Theater did not appear to launch immediately.  However, I have two Windows-based tablets I use (a Dell and an off-brand) and they are generally slower than most desktops so it takes a much longer time to update and install.  The first time it happened I again clicked on the Emby icon and Windows told me there was no such program and offered to delete the shortcut!

Anyway, I understand what is happening and what I wanted to suggest is that when Emby updates itself at startup that it would put up a splash screen letting the user know that an update is in progress.  This splash screen should stay up during the update process and then go away when the update is finished and Emby Theater actually starts.  This would let the user know that Emby Theater actually launched, but the program is busy updating itself.

Thanks.

Hey Luke -

Just wanted to bring this topic back up. I'd actually been meaning to post about it for quite a while, but life happens. LOL

Also, there haven't been many updates to Theater lately, so that helped it fall to the back burner on the To Do list.

I use a pretty low powered "Mini" PC for Theater (an old Acer RL100 running W10 Home) - which works surprisingly well for day to day usage. But, it crawls a bit on updates/upgrades. (Forget about using it if there are Windows updates installing for at least an hour!)

Scenario: I get all set to watch a show/movie, crank up Emby Theater - and if there is an upgrade - nothing happens. For a while. A long while, it seems. Which makes me start tinkering thinking I didn't actually click the Icon, so I click it again. Now, I've got error messages because Emby is trying to start while it is still upgrading. Grrr. Now, I am frustrated and the popcorn is getting cold and/or the ice in my Vodka Tonic is melting! LOL

The splash screen would be a huge improvement just so folks know something IS happening.. (In my case, the RL100 has no drive light indicator for an easy check..) But, even better would be a question asking if I want to perform the upgrade NOW or LATER (say next time I open or close Emby). Because, if I am starting Emby, it is probably because I want to watch/listen to something at that moment, not 20 minutes later (IE - above scenario)..

Or, maybe just set Theater to upgrade AFTER it is closed. With a message when it is opened, saying maybe something like "There is an upgrade available for Emby Theater which will be installed after the application is closed". Less programming that way, maybe..?? If the person wants the upgrade right then, they can close Theater and wait for it to complete. If not, they can keep watching/listening and close Theater when they are done.

Just my 2 cents..

Thanks!

I agree 100%.  The ideal solution is to allow the user to defer the upgrade to a time of their choosing.  If that isn't an option, then having a splash screen come up during the update process is the very least that should be added.
