No songs listed under Artist

Emby 3.5.0.0

I have a library of content type "Music" that I've been using for some time without issue. Not sure when this broke but as it stands I no longer see a list of songs underneath a specific artist.

Meaning:

  1. Go to the Music library and click the Artist link at the top.
  2. Select any artist.
  3. Note you'll see the artist image, title and play/related buttons (as you should) and below you'll see a list of other artists titled "More Like This".
  4. There are no songs listed anywhere and no errors in the console output.
  5. If you just hit the Play button the songs will play. They simply don't show up in the UI under an artist.

If you instead navigate using the top nav to "Songs". All the songs are listed as you would expect. So this issue seems specific to the Artist screen.

Also tried removing and re-adding the library, didn't help.

Tested with Chrome and using the Emby mobile app. Should also note the audio files are sitting in an NFS directory.

Right but you do see the Albums for the Artist correct.  Personally I wouldn't want to see the endless tracks listed under Artist.

No, I don't bother with albums. When I transcode the audio files only Artist Name and Song Title are included. The "Album" section is blank, as expected.

I don't believe the Music view will work for you then.  Then next release will have a Folder tab but for now in 3.5 you will have to see if Folder view works for what you want.

Dashboard-Library-Display-Display a folder view to show plain media folders

Nope, that won't work. That is no different that just viewing the "Songs" area under the Music library. All music is in a single folder, it is not organized into individual sub-folders by artist. Want I want (and how it used to work) is to see a flat list of all the songs for that particular artist.

The devs should keep in mind that not everyone is going to have a spotless media file with all tags. Using this new logic if just one song is missing that album tag it will be missing from the artist view entirely. Sounds like a bug.

In my opinion removing the previous functionality is not the way to go. If you want to change up how music is organized this should be a configuration option (IE: Album view vs Flat view). Everyone has different preferences, for me albums are pointless. I just want to pick an artist's song and play it without the extra digging.

Disappointing :(

Do you have embedded metadata or just filename?  I don't think any one tests this format in beta but the wiki says flat library should work.  But if it worked before then it may have been just overlooked.

Or even a flat library of song files:
 \Music
    1- Song.mp3
    2- Song.mp3

Personally the are to many tools out there not to tag them properly though.

I have the artist name and the song title embedded in the file. The filename also matches that information. I have written my own app that transcodes the files to a standardized format on my server and adds the metadata tags based on the filename. Using tools that try to "figure it out" to provide the rest of the information are iffy at best. They almost never match exactly which requires manual intervention and would be a significant amount of work. Plus, as I mentioned, I don't like the album structure view anyway :D

My directory structure is flat, for example:

/Music

The Artist Name - The Track Name.m4a

Another Artist - Another Track.m4a

I have this same issue and I have a massive library of over 100,000 songs that is meticulously tagged.

If you click the Artist or Album Artist it should show you the Albums, then ALSO show you a list of songs. I know it knows they're there because if you just hit 'play' it plays a list of every single song by the artist. Show it on the screen! If you're browsing around to make a playlist you NEED this function.

This will absolutely prevent me from buying the program until it's fixed.  Plex does this fine and I already paid for that so I have the mix function in that.

Yes, 4 months later and this is still a really annoying problem for me as well. I need to be able to see a list (flat view) of songs under an artist regardless of album. Also, the mod never addressed the concern I raised about people that do use albums but perhaps have some files that are missing the album tag. Those songs would be inaccessible unless you searched for the song name directly.

This is a significant bug in 3.5+ that has blocked me from listening to a lot of my music.

That would be super. The music aspect seems vastly better than plex. I have a few more things to test really but that was a big issue that would keep me from making a transition.

In the coming days I'll be testing some remaining things and likely switching when these last few kinks get ironed out. Good to see you guys are a lot more responsive to bugs than the plex guys.

Just upgraded to version 4.0.1.0 and this is still broken :(. The new "Folder" view is useless since all music files sit in the same directory. The UI just lists the song name twice (one in the box, one below).

Seems the solution at this point is to just write an app that sticks "N/A" into the Album tag.

We can look at improving support for this in a future update. Thanks !

So.... did you look at this?  Because currently I still cannot see tracks under artist view, only albums.  This is not useful to me.  As others have said, this a feature the software used to have that you removed, so why can't you reintroduce it?  Make it an option if you must, but there is literally nothing to lose by giving the user more information.

My library features a lot of compilation albums.  If I go to an artist page, I don't want to be redirected to an album featuring the artist plus 10 other artists.  I'm there to see that artists music.

As others have stated, pressing play on an artist page plays only their music, so Emby is obviously aware of exactly what songs are by said artist.  Make it visible to the user as well.

I am also in favour of improving this. At the moment I have moved all songs without album into a separate directory. But I would prefer to be able to put them into the respective directory of the artist – but that is currently not possible because Emby creates a huge chunk of several albums which are not really albums.

Since I didn't put an album in the MP3 tags, I can only find the songs now when I go over the directory listing.

This is really weak and should be improved urgently!
