Emby Server & Theater - Additional Extras/Special Folder Types for TV Series (similar to Movies)

first let the devs introduce extras for tv shows.. hehe.. because I don't think that gonna happen anytime soon , sadly.

currently they are just advicing to store the extras in season 00 / specials folder... heh.. i mean, how can both the things be the same? A special is a Special episode whereas an extra (clip/interview/featurette/BTS) is, well,... an extra, and need to be showcased just like they are showcased for movies.... below the cast.

I'd love to see this. I'm currently working my way through adding our Doctor Who DVDs to emby, and if you've ever done that you'll know that the classic season often has more specials every season than it has episodes (I've just done City of Death, for example, and that has 4 episodes but 10 extras).

Right now my workaround is to create a folder for the story (e.g. "105 City of Death"), put the episodes in there correctly named, and then the specials as "Doctor Who S00E1050 Paris in the Springtime", "Doctor Who S00E1051 Paris, W12"... it puts the specials at the beginning of the series. It's not great, but it (sort of) works.

Hello all. I have a workaround that has some extra benefits. I recently ripped all my DS9 discs and each season has 15-16 extras. I wanted a better way to do it. So, if this helps anyone, great. If you have tweeks, please post them. One big note: This is not automatic and takes a little time. However, for me it was well worth it. I will post a few screenshots.

1. Step 1 - Rip all files into MKV. It helps if you make them all the same video and audio.

2. Make sure all the extras are labelled or you have a list of the correct name for each.

3. Download MKVToolNix.

4. For one season, combine all the MKV files (extras) into one MKV file (added benefit: I was able to remove all the non-english audio and subtitles at this point). (for instructions, see MKVToolNix, however, you open the first file and then append the remaining ones).

4a. Rename the output file to something memorable. I labelled mine as "Star Trek Deep Space Nine - S02E99 - All Season 2 Extras" and multiplex the file. I choose E99 so it would show at the end of the episode list and I do not know of any tvshow that has > 98 episodes in one season.

5. Open the file in Chapter Editor of MKVToolNix. Change the name of each chapter to the name of the extra. For example, S2 extra#14, i relabeled chapter 14 to "Section 31 - Hidden files - 09 - Andrew Robinson (Garak) interview".

6. After EMBY has auto-named the actual episodes, then you can move this new file into the appropriate sub-directory. Then scan the libraries. Emby will put enter this into the library. and display.

7. Personal touch. I changed the image that emby chose as it was terrible.

8. Now, instead of 15-16 extra files for each season, I have one AND the best part, the chapters show up as scenes in Emby with titles (see picture).

Notes for next time. For some reason, Season 1 extras did not show the first chapter, but season 2 did. The MKV tool on season 2, but a header in the first chapter place with a 0 second, so allowed me to put in the first chapter name. Not sure how I did it.

Anyway, I really liked how this turned out.

Like I said, some work is involved but well worth the effort.

Don

Luke, thanks for the inspiration.

@@interman That's pretty cool, but with a large collection not really feasible...

Totally agree, just was working one night at 2:00 am and decided to play with the code and the files. Just two seasons of DS9 took me 2 hours. But I satisfied my OCD. Well, partially anyway.

Yes, the DVD extras for the Star Trek series are a pain as there are many... there are a few of those series with lots of extras, Dr Who is another good example

+ 1 from me for the extras for TV series as I was trying to deal with the extras for DS9 and stumbled across this. (well Google did the stumbling).

Was struggling to get it to work because I didn't realise the extras folders only worked for movies.

It is interesting to read the different ways users handle this.

I have begun combining extras for movies into one file, so it's kind of like a documentary about the film, easier to keep track of what you have watched.

I did something similar for the "Seinfeld" extras, combining extras from each season (deleted scenes, outtakes, inside looks) and telling Emby to play it at the end of that season.

For "The Office", I started merging the deleted scenes from several episodes together, and I have them play after those episodes in Emby.

I have taken to naming them "S00E101, S00E102...." and then adding my title.

I liked several of the posts already, but thought I'd try to share something constructive as well.

My current plan is to prefix all my blu-ray/dvd specials with the season they are from, then place them in the Season 0 directory.

For long running tv shows, that still ends up with way to many things in the Season 0 directory, but at least it is partially organized.

I really hope the devs can support the initial idea. Multiple options for naming your special directories, all in the appropriate season.

Another thought, couldn't there be an option in admin interface to let us choose specific directories as "specials" and then we could name them whatever we want?

Unfortunately, I suspect there are many ways that could go badly, if the user inadvertently uses names that somehow trigger other types of naming patterns (which then becomes a support nightmare for the devs). It's way safer to have a defined set of options so that the devs can test to make sure (as best they can -- these processes are never perfect) that there's no collisions, that nothing is getting broken. Obviously, the downside is less freedom/customization.

I suspect/hope we'll see some form of this request eventually -- I think the main thing is the devs deciding what naming pattern(s) makes the most sense for the most people.

+1 (and liked)

This is still a mess but you already have a simple mechanism for handling it that you created with movie extras, why so hard to implement it for TV Series?

Me too.

As emby's main purpose is to act as a library for your media, not being able to correctly archive your dvd and blueray collection of TV shows is a major shortcoming.

We shouldn't have to mess around with renaming shows with special prefixes or bundling several seasons of extras into one unwieldy unsorted folder or even video-editing files to combine them into one and using specialist software to create chapters, all workarounds that can work but totally counter intuitive, especially as you have the already intuitive system of extras folders for movies that you could just replicate.

It's possible for the future. Thanks.

Luke, any update on this?

Seems like this is a highly requested feature in multiple threads and this has been the official response for two and half years?

Even where the community has provided several suggestions how this could be implemented, there seems to be no traction or hope to get this issue resolved. Large series like seinfeld for example have over a hundred extras/bloopers/behind the scenes that are not even visible in emby from anything other than a tedious, community provided work-around.

Thank you for your consideration.

2021. The year we get a vaccine, a new American president, and additional extras/special folder types for TV series.

Here's a suggested timeline:

January: Biden

March: additional extras/special folder types for TV series

May: vaccine

It's gonna be a great year.

I really hope this could be added.

especially for me, I like watching Anime. Most of the Anime BD contain the extra videos such as Creditless Openings or Endings ……

Now, I use Season 11 to put these viedos (because for most TV series don't have more than 10 seasons.
