Subtitles not showing in video playback (Emby LG App)

Hello @@Luke,

Thanks for finally bringing Emby to LG AppStore  :)

I've tried the app on my TV (LG 43UJ701V / webOS 3.5) and unfortunately I cannot play with subtitles - they just don't show up no matter what language I choose.

  • DLNA playback is OK and shows subtitles accordingly.
  • I am using a custom profile named "LG Smart TV 2017" that is derived from the built-in "LG Smart TV" profile. The only difference is the support for HEVC; other than that, the profile is equal. You can find it attached below.
  • I also noted in the logs that subtitle encoding is ANSI (aka windows-1252). Is this an issue? They work OK via DLNA or XPlay (plex).

I've updated Emby server the latest version, also cleaned up the log folder before reproducing the issue so that you can have a clean slate of everything that is going on the server.

I attached a zip with:

  • The server log
  • The subtitle file
  • The custom profile that I'm using

My tv model is: LG 43UJ701V / webOS 3.5

Waiting for an update!

Thanks!

Hi @@Luke

I also see the same thing- I think, external Unicode subtitles are incorrectly recognised as ANSI, or somehow the character encoding is ignored and the server uses the "default" which is ANSI?

I have this problem, works everywhere else but not the lg app. SRT subs are fine but vobsubs are not displaying.

I have had to turn off transcoding to make playback work for me so when I turn it on, my computer cant really handle it but subs do work.

Hope that helps

Having the same issue here, I downloaded Emby on the hopes of getting easier subtitles for my movies, although they work on the webapp, nothing shows up on the TV. :(

I managed some sort of solution.

I found out that If I choose the movie and subtitle and send it to remote play trough the web app, it uses LG's video player instead of the Emby's, there the subtitles show up.

Once it starts I cannot change the language, but at least it shows up.

I kind of solves my problem, but I also can't choose titles from the TV, only from the computer. Which is kind of a pain, since I have to go up and down stairs. lol

I hope this information helps. :)

What happens when you press the input/source button on your TV’s remote control?

I noticed this too, but prefer to burn the subtitles (foreign/alien only for me) into the video file so not a priority for me.  I recommend Handbrake for this, works great...note it helps to have a 4+ core CPU!

+1 for me.

Just to clarify my tests, I installed Emby in order to be able to read 4K movies using direct play between my NAS and my new 4K TV (I had Plex before but it can not perform this when video files are mkv).

I then created a LG user and disabled all transcoding and conversion on it (as suggested on some posts in order to force direct stream).

It correctly direct-played the movie in LG Emby app but even if the subtitle is selected, it does not appear.

I tried using DLNA and the subtitle worked (at least for some of my videos files : those with external srt file and some including subtitles but not all - it may be due to the format of the srt inside the mkv file)

while I wait for WebOS2 emby app, use XPlay that direct plays 4K UHD REMUX's in MKV from Plex np, LG's can only Direct play SRT subtitles, none of the graphics subtitle work with LG tv's, so I would make Emby has SRT subtitles for you movie / video file.

The new update is great! So I have everything direct playing apart from video with vobsub subtitles. Is this a known issue or should I use the 'report a problem' procedure?

Thanks

@@SamES do we know if LG supports these?

@@Luke no they don't, LG don't support any graphics subs, only text based ones.

I haven't checked, but I'd be surprised if they were supported.

Thanks all, so I have converted everything to srt and working fine as long as I keep the transcoding setting off and its not a 4k hdr. Is this 4k hdr bug known?
