I like theme videos in the android app on my tablet and in ET. Having this in the Roku client would be really cool! Any timeline on incorporation?

TIA

I just read on another thread that Theme Music is on the roadmap for Roku. What about Theme Videos?

Thanks.

I have never liked theme music playing while I browse and I am quite sure I would like theme videos even less. But if they can be turned off and if the code to include them does not break anything then I can see no objection.

It is well to keep in mind that when "fluff" that does not directly contribute to the primary duty of client apps (playing media) gets added it can, and often does, introduce complications that break other parts of the app.

It is my belief that "fluff" (like theme anything) should be added only after careful examination of possible and even improbable side effects and should always default to OFF. If users want to use it they can go into settings and turn it on. It is my belief that it is a mistake for companies to try to enhance everyone's "experience" with intrusive features that do not directly contribute to the ability to play media. It should be user choice and it should be "opt in" not "opt out."

If you don't add in Theme Videos Plugin you don't get the "fluff".

Personally, I like it in the Android Apps and in Emby Theater.

With your argument against "fluff", why use Emby at all? You could just navigate to the folder and play the file directly on whatever OS you are using.

If it is done as a "plugin" then there is nothing to discuss. You load it if you want and you don't if you don't.

However I thought this was about adding it as an integral part of the app. But I have been wrong before and will be again.

As far as your last argument goes it is impossible on the Roku. The Roku, which is the section we are in, requires some type of client/server setup and Emby is currently the best I have found for my rather complex and extensive media library. I have almost 3000 movies and over 500 TV shows including almost 30000 episodes. It requires a good media manager to keep that organized and accessible. Emby is a good media manager and plays my media quite well.

My argument against fluff is NOT against addons but rather it is intended to be cautionary about adding complexities to the core of a client or server application.

Plex has gone the other way and added a bunch of fluff to their core that has caused unexpected side effects and driven a number of long time users away.

Addons are good but over complicating the core is a good way to end up with a broken app and I do not want to see Emby ruin a great system by going down that road as Plex has.

Emby just, in my opinion, needs to move very slowly when adding things to the core of their server or their clients. to avoid breaking their great system.

This is more toward adding the same funtionality to the Roku app/client, as the Server already has via the plugin.

But I agree add-ons/plugins are better to keep the server core simple.

Roku most certainly can play your local media (you'll need to be logged into your Roku Account to follow link) without Emby. Using Emby adds a slick interface and decoder for unsupported formats which is much better but can still be considered "Fluff".

Netflix has Theme Videos in Roku and Emby has them in other client apps without issue. It would be nice to have this available on Roku.

You will note that that is still a client/server system for playing off the network. Roku media Player as a client and any of a number of servers serving media to it.  As I said, Emby is the best of the client/server systems I have tested by a pretty good margin.

I really do not care if Netflix has Theme Videos as I do not use Netflix and I think it is a horrid example of an app for Roku and I do not care if other Emby clients has them and I do not care if the Roku client adds them.

What I care about is if adding them breaks core functionality in the Roku app and if it can be turned off or otherwise totally disabled.

I do NOT want them and others do as long as we have choice all is good. It is only when features are forced on us, as Netflix has done and as Plex has done or when they break functionality that they are bad.

I just want the choice to not use theme anything and as long as choice exists all is good.

Less we digress. If you don't want to use the Plugin then don't. Whether you use netflix is immaterial here. We do, well my wife does and I cannot keep up with feeding her media consumption. She must watch 4 or 5 episodes every single day and $8/month is very worth my time not trying to support that. My point was that it has Theme Videos and that is all.

The purpose of this thread is if or when theme videos might be available in Roku.

This will eventually come to the app but it is in line behind some other more core features.  It will be optional on multiple levels when it is implemented meaning that there will be an option to turn them on or off in the app as well as the fact that neither theme music nor theme videos would ever play in any app if you didn't have those items in your library setup.

So, if its something you would never want in any app, then it would have no impact on you.

I think the Roku app is pretty polished as it is but what else is going on with it? Lossless audio and 23.x fps would be nice.. not sure Roku supports that though, at least in the lesser models like we have. We use 6 Rokus right now. 4x 2's and 2x 1's all third generation (2015) versions.
