next release of what?

Since this is the general section of the community, next means the next stable release (4.2).

I made some adjustments for this in the 4.2 release.

I have been listening via the TuneIn plugin lately and didn't notice this. Since I have been vocal in the past it was only right to try it and it does seem I am hearing songs that I had even forgot were in my library so the adjustments so far do appear to have improved the 'randomness' of shuffle from the top level ( I am currently listening via Theater on my PC desktop).

Thank you Luke

Indeed. And they play in the same order as before.

I shuffled the big bang theory twice in the last couple of days. Watched maybe 5 shows the first day and the second day I was offered 2 of those 5 as the 1st and 3rd episodes in the second day.

Not at all random

month and month go by and the only thing that is more annoying then this bug is, that nobody seems to care to eventually properly implement this

I know this doesn't help any but un-random, random play doesn't seem to be reserved to just Emby. I have smart playlists in Kodi for TV shows and have those set to play randomly and they are, if anything, worse in repeating themselves than Emby is so its not isolated.

I remember when I had one of the first iPods it did the same thing.

Correct.  Computers are actually not that good at truly "random" things... :)

We can continue to try and improve this but we are always going to be limited to the limitations of other implementations within the platforms we are using.  The smaller the data set, the less "random" it is going to feel as well.

Computers arent random, however pseudo random is enough for security porpouses, it should be also for shuffling.

so just because "all" the others do it wrong we don't deserve a proper implementation?

we all know that there is no real random in the computer world no need to repeat

the problem is well explained and we struggle for 3 years know to get something fixed

and another 4 months of zero progress, it's so dissapointing 😒

What are you using as a test and what size sample or number of media items in the playlist?

really? everything again from the begining? we had no progress since 3 years, we knew that emby is doing some "subpar" random funtion and knowing that, test and sample size don't matter, cause the results are the same

nevertheless for sure we report that for large numbers of episodes (7+ seasons with 20+ episodes each)

So a playlist of video files with roughly 140 episodes?

It happens with both large and small playlists and happens to both video playlists as well as audio playlists. It is frustrating to never hear some songs or see some episodes in a playlist while hearing and seeing others over and over when shuffling.
