Some issues/questions as brand new user

Hi folks. I am a brand new user. I have just installed Emby a couple of hours ago and started trying to set it up. Let me tell you that I currently use Kodi and I am a computer system engineer so I understand computer technology very well.

So I installed the product, defined my primary movie folder (movies are NOT in separate folders), and the scan started. I left it alone overnight.

1. When I select the Movies folder, there are several tabs at the top. First question: Some movies don't have the poster image I want. OK, so I try to update it. I look up the movie in IMDB.com. Then I right click the movie, select "Identify", enter the title, year, and IMDB code and search. The correct poster that I want will come up. I select it, check the box to update the current image, and click save. It looks like it worked but the image never changes on the "Movies" screen.

2. Some of the movies will have a poster image that is exactly what I want. But the next time I look at the movie poster screen some of them are missing. These are ones that were there before.

3. On that same screen, if I pick the "Genres" tab there is absolutely nothing.

4. On the same screen again, if I pick the "Studios" tab, there is one entry which is obviously not a complete list since I have 400 movies in my movie folder.

5. On the "Trailers" tab I have the same issue with poster images. There are lots of entries with no poster image. I go through the same process described above in #1 and again I never can get the poster image to display correctly.

I should add that in a few cases I have gone to my movie folder, where all the metadata files are being stored, and looked at the posted image that is in the folder for the movie. It will be the correct one. That made me think I just need to rescan the library. So I pull up "Setting", then go to the "Library" selection and click "Scan Library". It seems to finish almost immediately but none of the things I wanted to change have changed.

I have no doubt that these are "newbie" issues but so far I have not been able to figure them out. Can some of you folks, with imminently more knowledge than me about this product, help me to sort out these initial setup issues so I can move on with other aspects of the product and start evaluating it? I sure would appreciate it.

Am sure someone will chime in who knows what they're talking about, but under Settings (the gear symbol), did you go to Library and click on the three dotted symbol thingy and then select Manage Folders. You need to select what to download and where to store it, enable chapter image extraction, etc, unless you've done this stuff already. Emby usually downloads stuff on demand unless you tell it otherwise.

Personally I like to go to Settings / Scheduled Tasks and tell it to update stuff manually which seems to help.

Also saw a thread somewhere about a DoS attack going on at the OMDB which might be affecting metadata / images downloading.

Don't know why it would be deleting posters you already have though.

Putting movies in their own folders might help, but I think it should cope as it is anyway, so maybe not essential. There's a Wiki somewhere about naming conventions though.

Thanks for the reply but it doesn't really address any of my issues. I have the settings correct as far as I can tell. I sincerely hope someone else will step up and give me some help. It's obvious from reading other forum threads that we've got some real experts in these forums.

I'll try and comment on my experience with this, but be aware, I have noticed on one or two files odd behaviour (but not in relation to images.)

1. The most reliable way to solve this problem is to go into the Movie itself, not choose "Identify" but choose "Edit Info" and make sure your IMDB code is correct and press "Save".  Then click "Refresh" (and click replace images) and see what comes up.  If you still don't like the images selected, click on "Edit Images" and select the images you want for the various portions (primary, backdrop, etc.).  I've never had that fail for me.  Worse comes to worse, you click Edit Images and upload the pictures you want.  Make sure to click Save, when available, before switching screens.

2.  Can you clarify on this one?  More likely than not, I assume that the movie will still have the wrong IMDB information and is overwriting what is there or something to that effect.

3. That seems like perhaps all the metadata for your movies hasn't downloaded.  I've never experienced this one.

4. Again, perhaps metadata hasn't downloaded?  I've also never experienced this one.  That being said, for this and #3, I've had this experience with actors/people, and I have to "Refresh" the individual movies to get them to populate correctly.

5. Try and follow the process I outlined and see if you have the same issue.

You could also attempt to run the task of "Clean Database" after you have put up the images you like and see if there is some sort of persistent data there that needs to be purged.

For #1, just to correct legallink, the Identify feature is the recommended approach, but his way of doing it will work as well.

It sounds like the root of all your issues is lack of internet metadata. FYI, one of our providers has been experiencing some outages, which you can read about on their website:

http://www.omdbapi.com/

But that still should not prevent the use of TheMovieDb. At this point I would like to see a server log. please go through the identify process for a movie, then attach the complete server log. you can learn how to do that here:

Thanks !

I want to report that Luke was absolutely right, everything was related to internet metadata. I guess I didn't realize how long it would take for all of the metadata to populate. I am used to being a Kodi user and it seems Kodi could populate the metadata faster. Doesn't matter to me. Overnight all of the metadata was populated and everything I reported as acting weird seems to be correct now. So now I can start loading apps on a few devices and see what happens.

On a slightly different note, where is a good place to find pics to populate the movie listing pages? Most of my movies had good pics loaded automatically. I am using the "thumb card" option for displaying the movies and there are 4 or 5 movies that MB can't seem to find any good pic in that aspect ratio. I looked on IMDB and MovieDB and while they have lots of pics they don't seem to have one like that. Suggestions?

Thanks for reporting back.

Have you tried using the image editor feature? Just select edit images using the 3-dot menu.

I did but for a handful of movies it doesn't find pics the right shape (I know I'm a little anal about these types of things).

I can find vertical poster images but not horizontal thumbnail issues like all the others use with the thumbnail or thumbnail card format. Can't find background images. Examples are Atlas Shrugged Part I and Atlas Shrugged Part II. Those are just two examples.

You have to use the dropdown box to pick the image type that you want to search for. When primary is selected it will be searching for 2:3 poster images. After that, if it still doesn't return any results then you can search on TheMoviedb.org and fanarttv. to check and see what images they actually have.

You mean like this?  I just had to refresh the items that were only showing backdrops instead of posters.

I have been actively using the drop-down menu. For those examples it didn't find anything. The other site I didn't know about so I will try that for sure.

Its not very elegant, but sometimes I just google the title and see if either the original program /  channel has something on their website, or maybe an image from a review, or just images in general. I'll even crop a poster to landscape or vice versa. Maybe add a title if I have to - some vaguely Art Deco font for something set in the 30's or whatever.
