BD ISOs appearing as DVDs in MBT

Hi,

Just recently, the last few BDs that I have added to my media library in ISO format are showing up with DVD covers instead of Bluray covers in MBT. When I try and play them, TMT 6 is launched but the ISOs will not mount or play (presumably because it is looking for a VIDEO_TS folder?). If I quit MBT and double-click one of the new the ISO files in Explorer to have Daemon Tools mount it, TMT 6 then launches and plays the disc without any problems.

Any ideas why these recent ISOs are being seen as DVDs? They have folder names in the format <Film Name><space>[bD], just like all the others that work. The folder contents have the usual graphic files and a movie.xml file. I have compared the movie.xml files with films that work and can see no significant differences.

MBS version 3.0.5818.0

MBT version 3.05859.23399

Thanks

Hi ebr,

Yep when new content has been added to the library previously (up until about a week ago) MBS would detect the ISO and display it as a BD in MBT, which is what it is. When you click play, MBT treats it appropriately and uses the correct external player/mount settings. With the last couple of ISOs added to the library these are showing up in MBT incorrectly as DVDs instead of BDs. There is no VIDEO_TS folder in the film directory so I'm not sure why these are being detected as DVDs instead of BDs - I notice there is no tag for file formats in the movie.xml file. How does film format detection work?

Thanks

the server is only seeing an iso, not the contents within so there's no way to determine dvd vs bluray. we're going to have to come up with a way, whether it be a file naming convention or a dropdown on the editing page.

Isn't that what "Treat as" is for?

i suppose that would be ideal but cover art needs exclusivity over that field. we need something friendlier since treat as is just a plain text field

That field is actually Treat image as.

I agree with Luke, we should have a better way for the system as a whole.

Joker - my comment was really why in the world are you still creating ISOs.  I mean, I understand why some people have a bunch of them from way back when, but why are you still creating them?  They are not going to provide you with the best feature set going forward in today's streaming file world...

Ah I see - thanks ebr I didn't realise what you meant. I also didn't realise that ISOs are an ancient container format. Is .MKV the preferred container going forward? I will search around these forums to find out and the best way to convert my ISOs as it would be great to avoid the need to mount ISOs and all the complexity/issues that can go along with that. At the end of the day I just want a lossless format for audio and video and must retain 3D playback support. I must admit that once I finally got reliable ISO mounting/BD/3D playback working with MBT and TMT6 I just kept everything as it was as I need the experience to be as 'appliance' like for my family. It is straneg how the last 2 ISOs added to the collection are being seen as DVDs when this has not been a problem to date. I don't think I have done anything differently.

I will look into converting to MKV.

Thanks

p.s. if I can play back BDs (and 3D BDs) in a format that does not require ISO then it potentially unblocks my upgrade to the new MBT client (which doesn't currently support external players as I understand it). However my primary usage scenario is high quality local playback (home cinema) without transcoding of video or audio.

You may be stuck with the folder format depending on your player and exact 3D setup, but you are not stuck with ISO for anything.  That is a completely unnecessary complication that you should be able to eliminate.

Not really. Besides iso mounting (which the older Emby server does a great job), there is not other way to play the 3D blurays with menus (using external player). You can extract ISOs in folder format but that essentially doubles your disc space per movie.

On a separate note, the question for the devs is this: Does a 32 bit version of most current Emby server beta still support ISO mounting? or its also lost?

In my setup (>50 3D Bluray ISO rips), Emby has a distinct advantage over Plex due its support for ISOs, I request you to please do not make Emby another Plex in that regard.

It is not in the 32-bit build either right now, but you should be able to grab the last version that had the feature here:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases/tag/3.0.5786

Important - if you already have the new beta then this build is not compatible with that, which means you'll have to do a fresh install.

Please note once again - this does not affect your ability to use ISO's with htpc clients that have full support for them. We still support that. We're only talking about the experimental streaming support. We're not looking to become another anyone but the reality is we do have to focus our time on what the largest number of people want. We've got large numbers of people wanting things like xmltv support, dvb tuners, apps on lots of other devices, and the list goes on. So hopefully you'll understand that it can be hard to prioritize something like this, especially given that so far only a few people have even made a mention of it.

Thanks Luke. It does look like I'm stuck with ISO for the time being for my 3D movie support. It's interesting that I've never hit this issue before of BDs being classified as DVDs, it only started last week. What you say makes sense though - MBS cannot see inside the ISO so maybe I have just been lucky to date. I'll keep an eye on the change logs to see if a custom format field does get added in the future.

So I was thinking on Luke's previous answer that MBS has no way of determining the content within the ISO file, but it doesn't explain why this used to work until recently and then stopped. My Blu-ray folders all have "<Film name> [bD]" - did MBS stop reading the old [bD] tag recently? All new BDs being added to the library are coming up as DVDs now and cannot be played (because TMT is told to launch them as DVDs) which makes Emby useless for me :(.

Because the server used to mount the ISO's and examine the contents. Not to worry, we are working on another way of tagging the ISOs and should have something related to that very soon.

  • Solution

So here is what I've come up with the for the next emby server release. I've updated the video naming wiki to include ISOs:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Movie%20naming

It goes over how to name the ISO's so that Emby Server will know if it's a dvd or bluray iso. As it turns out, we should have had these conventions all along. The linux and mac versions of Emby Server never had ISO mounting, which means they've always been recognized as dvd. The fact that nobody has ever come forward and reported an issue about it I think speaks to the plummeting demand for ISO features.

In any event, this naming convention will allow them to get recognized properly.
