So, is there ANY hope, that there will be a real Emby app for PS4/PS5?

If not, I would say Emby on PS4/PS5 is dead (as it never was really there).

Ciao, Alfred

I highly doubt it as the dev team doesn't have millions of dollars to bribe Sony like Plex does/did.  And even with their cash, the Plex app on PS5 is apparently a dumpster fire as the PS5 sucks for media playback in regards to compatibility.  https://www.reddit.com/r/playstation/comments/juveg6/so_about_the_ps5_does_it_have_a_media_player_app/

Stop trying to use your consoles for things they were never designed for?

@RanmaCanada

Thank god, I can decide how to use my hardware and I don't have to ask internet trolls for this.

Emby explicit mentions PS4 as supported hardware on the download page, but this is just false advertising, as there never was an app but only a crappy interface in the web browser (you have to move the mousepointer with the analog stick to click on the items, very unusable).

Emby should stop advertising Emby for PS4, as there is no Emby for PS4 (or PS5).

On the other hand, I wonder, if it is really that hard to write apps for the PS Store, if you see all that crap for a few bucks, just for trophy hunters, that get released every week. I don't think, these developers spent millions of dollars for that apps.

Same as with the (worldwide) Samsung app, nobody says, the app has to be free, I don't think anybody will have problems to pay a few bucks for this.

Tried on ps4 using webbrowser.

Sigh :( not user friendly at all..
Plex has an app though, why not emby.
TRied playing 1 minute before buying emby.

It keeps spinning around to load :(

Hi there, can we please look at an example?

Thanks!

I tried another and then it played but with stutter.

Is that cause it was software transcoding?

Will the PS4 do hardware transcoding once i have premiere... or is the transcoding done on server side? (unraid)

I tend to agree with @RanmaCanada that the PS5 isn't really the device you want to use for media playback.  Sure an occasion play here or there but not as your main media player.  It just doesn't much in the way of media and is very limited.  With each new generation of the PS it's getting worse in this respect.

Below are the specs of video media it plays.

  • MKV
    • Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2
    • Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
  • AVI
    • Video: MPEG4 ASP, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2
    • Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
  • MP4
    • Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 5.2 (PlayStation®4 Pro only)
    • Audio: AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), LPCM
  • MPEG-2 PS
    • Video: MPEG2 Visual
    • Audio: MP2 (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2), MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), LPCM
  • MPEG-2 TS
    • Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2, MPEG2 Visual
    • Audio: MP2 (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2), AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
  • AVCHD (.m2ts, .mts)
  • XAVC (.mp4)

If you try it again you should be able to look at the dashboard on your server when it's software transcoding to see how fast it's going. The frames per second (fps) will give you a good idea.  If your server has and Nvideo graphic card or Intel CPU with QuickSync then Premiere should help a lot as it will allow you to handle the transcoding in hardware vs software.

If you're going to playback a lot of media routinely I'd look for a cheaper box that's geared more to playing media such as a FireTV or the Xiaomi Mi Box S

You can get the stick version for around $40 or under $30 on sale.

The PS5 does have a nice user interface. It's a shame they're not opening up their app store to all developers.

@skank Plex was gifted over $50 million so they could bribe certain companies to open up their platform for them (prior to this they had already secured over $5 million for "bribing").  That is why they have an app.  But again, the plex app is a dumpster fire as media compatibility for Playstations is garbage.  As @cayars says, just buy a firestick or Mi Box.  As for the person saying "Thank god, I can decide how to use my hardware and I don't have to ask internet trolls for this."  You actually can't as the mfg has crippled your hardware.  That's like saying "I want to cook a turkey in my toaster oven".  Trying to use a device for something it was never intended for, and then talking down to the people who have showed you why it's not feasible, just makes you an unmentionable, nothing more.

If Emby had the money rolling in like Plex did, I'm sure they'd be at the same level.  But because Plex is so large, many problems and apps are abandoned as they no longer care about fixing problems.

The company grew its revenue by 40% last year, CEO Keith Valory told Protocol, and is looking to further accelerate that growth this year. Plex is now seeing 13 million monthly active users, with Valory forecasting user growth of 40% to 50% in 2022. "From a business standpoint, things have never been better," he said.
