Ok sorry for the post topic but MS can suck a fat one.  Not sure if many of you realized this yet but MS has decided to change guide providers for the EPG.

They were using Zap2It and have decided to switch to some provider noone has ever heard of, called Rovio (apparently it was always used on the XBone EPG)

At any rate I had to discover this the hard way by chance of having to reformat my Win7 MC machine today only to find it refuses to connect to download the setup data.

There's already a thread going on the green button in regards to this "cutover" or as I'd like to call it right now ROYALLY FUCKING OUR CUSTOMERS IN THE ASS

I've been fighting with this for a few hours, ironically it's not affecting my Win8 machine (it connects just fine pulls down the "tv setup data" just fine)

Links below are to MS's little itty bitty post about this cutover and also the thread on the green button of many more unhappy people.

It is an unfortunate move but makes sense since they are ending support for Media Center. Though I thought Rovio were the Angry Bird people. Didn't know they did anything with live television.

I don't know it works fine here. Those on greenbutton said they like the new guide data a lot more than the last guide because almost every show now has a marquee in the guide info.

I had that issue you describe a long time ago. It probably just means a server is down because I tried it a little later and it worked fine.

Sorry I had the name wrong it's rovi, not rovio.  What I've been reading is the data is hit or miss, many are reporting incorrect lineups, (or no lineup at all) missing channels, missing data, etc.

Media Center support will last untill 2022/2023 when support for Win8 ends, while it's true that there is no longer a media center team at MS they still have to support it.

Actually they don't. In that there is nothing legally requiring them to support the App for another 7-8 years. They just killed a bunch of apps and will be pulling support by next month. However by switching providers to the one used by Media Center's successor, the XBOX One, they are prolonging what little support you'll receive on an application that hasn't been updated since Windows XP.

Right, they have to support it, but that doesn't mean they have to give it much priority. For example, they may have decided that they wanted to move forward with this new guide and that they didn't want to have to pay for or maintain two services. So they forcibly switched everyone over to the new service, even if it's not a perfect fit for WMC. And they probably knew of the side effects but they decided that as long as users can see a program title and press play, then it's good enough for the old software. Not that I am justifying that but these are the kinds of decisions that are made at every software company.

Considering they purposely setup a page for comments/feedback on the cutover it would seem they do "care" at least somewhat that it's working right.  Remember people in the last 2 years have paid 100 bux to get media center as an addon to Windows8 so for them to really screw things up could legally and monetarily bite them in the ass if someone was smart enough to start a class action.  I'm not saying this issue is worthy of legal action yet that's still to be seen as the day's and weeks go by.

After literally fighting with this for close to 9 hours I finally got it resolved.  It would seem that MS/Akamai is having some serious issues right now and DNS was pointing to bad addresses (while they resolved and responded they were not allowing access to data)  I finally found a set of working IP's to use in my Host's file that someone local to my area posted up tonight on the MS feedback site in regards to the guide cutover.  Once I put them in my HOSTS file it FINALLY worked!

So is the guide data working well for you now that the issue was resolved?

It seems like MS just wanted everyone on the same guide data, I'm not sure what is so bad about the new provider, but as long as it can equal the old provider and the transition smooths out over time, it should be fine.

So far yes.

Rumor has it Live TV coming to XBox1 which would explain the guide update/change.

It has been rumored for a while that M$ will back the xbox 1 a media center. Their next console is supposed to be everything in 1. Gaming/TV/DVR etc.

But we will see next year or 2017 for that.

ROVI was already used from day 1 for XBOne, however they now have swtiched WMC to use ROVI as well.

Lots of people are having issues.  It's not just the unable to connect to the download server but the actual guide data.   Most of the issues are able to be solved by using the third party GuideTool program but in my case there are OTA channels with no guide service available and with guide service that got the timezone wrong.   I've submitted tickets to Rovi and to Microsoft but no response from either party.   The Zap2it guide data was working perfectly.

I've also got Tivo and even they can't seem to get all of the guide data right but do respond to tickets and are working on it.  I'm considering switching my WMC service to Emby and using Schedules Direct for guide data but haven't quite decided to make the move yet.  I'd lose my DRM channels - HBO/Cinemax and the like but suspect I'd have a better system in the long run. How's EmbyTV with respect to channel changes?   Switching between channels in WMC was very fast compared to most of the alternatives.  This is with an HDHomeRun Prime and an HDHR4-2US.   I've also got an original HDHR-US but it doesn't look like that's supported by Emby since it's not DLNA.

I had to drop WMC. My guide stopped at 7pm last night and no updates what so ever. Switched the whole system from Windows to Debian with tvheadend until EmbyTV becomes more stable.

I think EmbyTV is getting there. It's actually in process of being pulled into the server as a core feature, and will auto-discover your hdhomerun with nice and easy setup.

but the best thing to do is install it and participate rather than waiting for anything to happen with it.

I have been running it on my test machine, so far I LOVE IT, but the little bugs that people have already pointed before I was able to post about them, they quicker than I am LOL.

With it being Halloween season for me (I ship Candy for several candy manufacturers in case your wondering), my time is very limited and I do what and  when I can.

I will definately try to be more involved in trouble shooting with it as time becomes available.

Would love to see Emby TV come full stream, I have seen the new HD Homerun software, and IMO not a fan.

Will EmbyTV support older HDHomeRun devices that don't support DLNA?  I'm one of the people who was using ServerWMC and this Microsoft MediaCenter Guide thing screwed everything up.  I tried switching to EmbyTV, but my HDHR devices don't support DLNA.  So now I have to figure out how to fix my Guide problems.

The older ones don't have any kind of api so we would have to use device drivers. so based on degree of difficulty it's unlikely right now.
