I've just added play media to the home screen. Now if you select a playable item on the home page, including tv & media view it will play it. One difference from elsewhere is that in the home screen , it will resume rather than play if the item is resumable. The feature should be in the dev build in a few days

Great feature, Thank you!

Shaun - you're really on a roll here, fantastic work.

Now, is there any chance of getting MBT to automatically select the next unplayed episode when entering into a season? (Like MBC does).

I'll add it as feature request. I'm planning to implement an autoplay next item in list some time in the future and I could look at it then. Its not high on the list though, so it will probably be a bit of a wait.

Can you explain what the issue is ?

How and when did the behaviour change ?

i posted a thread about this a few weeks back and others had the same issue. Links to posts below

if you view your collection through Movies or the TV heading, you can change the view to poster wall etc and theres an option to save this setting. if you view your collection through folders, you can set the view to poster wall but the sort by option is greyed out so you cant select the remember this view option. therefore when you leave the screen your on and go back it goes to the default view.

i dont think this option has ever worked in folder view.

Hey Shaun.

For me if I went to switch my view for movies it stayed that way.  When I updated a week ago, it reverted back to poster strip.  When I go and switch it now to poster wall it will switch but if I leave and come back it will be back to the poster strip.

Whereabouts is this "save view" option - I can change the view to "Poster Wall" but I can't see any save view option anywhere.

if you go to the movies collections and go to the menu 'top right' then go to Sort by and the last option is Remember sorting.

however if you go to Folders and select one of the folders, the Sort by option is greyed out so no way to select the Remember sorting.

I was about to say that that option was to member "sorting" not the "view" but it does remember the view as well - not what I was expecting.

I'll a have a look at the folder view preferences and see what is going on

Shaun,

Not sure if this helps in your investigation of folder view preference, but it looks like any folders that were sorted prior to the last couple of MBT updates have retained their preference. Any new folders that I have added will not retain a folder view preference when set. They always default back to the POSTER STRIP view.

Let me know if there is anything else you might need to investigate further.

yea, putting the remember view/sorting option in the Sort By menu under  remember sorting is a little confusing. It's difficult to find a better way to do it though without making the menu too complex. We don't want to introduce another level of menus and it does not make sense to have a remember sorting/view preferences in the top level menu.

Might not be related, but this reminded me that saving of play states (resume functionality) and watch status behaves similarly.

Not 100% on the pattern, but for some media items it works and for some not - and I got the feeling it had to do with the age of the items.

ye im also having weird issues with resume and if i watch a film if i exit it even after a few seconds it marks it as watched, also when adding new media to my collection it marks it as watched.

How sorting and view preferences currently work

1. There is a "Select View" menu with 4 view types & an "Sort By" menu with a bunch of options plus a "remember sorting"

2. The remember sorting option will save your selected preference for both view & sorting for the page your are currently in (with some important caveats, more later)

3. A number of pages i.e Genres, don't allow "Sort By", with the side effect that you can't save the view

4. Some pages are really only a short cut into another page with an particular menu entry already selected, i.e Trailers, just takes you to the movie view with the trailer menu option selected. The side effect of this is that any preference set for movie view will be the same for trailer view and visa versa

5. The caveat - The view/sort preference is saved for the category of the page, not the specific page itself. I.e. If you change the view type of the episode list page for season 1 of  one show, it is changed for all episode lists for all seasons for all pages. BTW, you can't see this for yourself as of now, because I had to change the code to force it to save all preference changes to test it.

6. The global default view is poster strip

Current list of view/sort preference behaviour

Home page movie view

Movies - View & Sort, Can save

Genres - View, no save

Timeline - View, no save

Trailer - Just movies, with trailer menu set

Home page TV view

TV Shows - View & Sort, Can save

Genres - View, no save

Upcoming Tv - Bug, currently goes to TV Shows

Folders (all sub folders)

         View, no save

Proposed Behaviour

1. Add a global preference in the Appearance page  under settings

CheckBox - "Remember sort and view setting  for all pages", default to off

(and maybe) Default View select list

2. Remove remember sorting from Sort BY menu

3. If the global remember flag is set

a. the first time you access page category, it defaults to default view type

b. If you change the view type (and sort), it will be remembered the next time your visit

4. If the global remember flag is not set

a. Anytime you visit a page category, it defaults to default view type

b. If you change the view type (and sort), it will be remembered until you close that page

There will still be some potentially confusing behaviour -

a. you are changing preferences for categories of pages, not the pages themselves.

b. A long page forward chain and jumping around views can mean it can unclear when a page is actually closed

I think it would be better to always remember the view without the need for some kind of switch. MBC always remembers the view for each page type.

If you prefer to have a setting, then I'd suggest having two (one for view and one for sorting) - occasionally I may change the sort order, but I certainly wouldn't want it to remember that sort order, whereas I would always want it to remember the view I'd selected.

I agree whatever view I am in it should just remember my view.

So for example I am on movie view then I switch the view it will remember it.

then I go to tv view and switch it to a different view and it remembers it.

So forget the global preferences and always remember the view but don't remember the sort, they're temporary changes only

Yes with a but... I think some users would like to have the option to save the sort sequence.

In MBC there's a config setting: "Remember Folder Indexing" which is similar to sorting. I have that turned off, as I don't want sorting to persist between sessions, but some users would have it turned on.

Not really. Take your Movie and Trailer example. Movies are usually sorted by Sort Name. Whereas sorting Trailers by name pretty much makes them worthless. You want Trailers sorted by release date and descending so the newest trailers are usually first. There is no real use watching a trailer for a movie released six months ago. You want this sort to stick to reduce clicks and time. Having to sort and resort every view makes for a tedious interface and experience.

can you add a separate option to remember view like the remember sorting? that way the user has control over all the aspects.

or have a way to set the default view from poster strip to poster wall. i much prefer having the 2 rows when scrolling through my movies. 3 rows would also be nice  :D

I guess there are 2  candidate solutions

1. Have 2 global preferences - remember sorts & remember views and don't have remember options on sort by and select view menus

or

2. Have have a remember sort option on the sort by menu and a remember view option on the view menu and no global option

which is best

Does MBT not resume if you use an external player?

With mpc-hc i can't ever resume and it never saves my resume points. Is this a known MBT issue or am i doing something wrong? Scene selection also doesn't work it starts from the beginning of movie no matter the scene i select.
