Have to reboot Mac to restart Emby

Recommended Posts

So I recently moved my Emby from unraid to Mac a few months ago. Everything works well but there's one reoccurring issue I can't seem to get past - the only way I can restart Emby successfully/gracefully is by restarting my Mac.

For example if I install a plugin, I can't reboot emby successfully from the menu. It simply won't start back up. If I go into Applications to start it manually one of two things happens:

1) I get a error that says it's already running and sure enough activity monitor shows emby processes running. But the even if I force shut those down and there are zero Emby processes running, it still won't boot up. OR

2) No error message but the application still doesn't start (but it relaunches those emby processes).

This scenario happens 100% of the time. Launching Emby at startup works without issue.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue been able to resolve it? Any guidance would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor) and in the processes list you will find 'Emby Server' is active. Highlight it and click on the stop button ('x' top right).

This should then end the active process and you can restart Emby as usual.

Hope this helps

Per my post, I’m familiar with activity monitor

Just installed the latest beta version of the server and this issue seems to be resolved :-)

Hey thats good news. You're able to shut down or reboot emby on mac successfully without lingering processes?

To be honest I’ve not checked for any lingering processes but last week as a frustrated new user I was close to deleting the software everywhere. Now I can shutdown and restart whenever I want.

That leaves me free to concentrate on the iOS issues :-/

If you can reboot Emby successfully without rebooting Mac I’d consider that a success.

Interesting I’ve not had any issues with iOS.

It's improved but a lot of the same issues are still occurring. Im having issues with it booting up from startup items and then if it doesn't, manually starting doesn't always work with processes running etc.

Now I can't actually see the processes in Emby running in activity monitor (unless its named something other than emby). So I can't restart it by killing those and trying to install a new one gives me the error "can't install while emby is still running".

Are you still getting two Emby Server Apps running? I have one with no icon 'EmbyServer' and one with the icon 'Emby Server' (notice the space). The first one with no space is taking up 90%+ of a CPU at all times which is odd.

When updating I always quit the app from the menu bar which leaves the EmbyServer (no space, no icon) running at just under 90% CPU so I quit that one via Activity Monitor before restarting from my Applications folder. If you only type 'emby' into the search bar on Activity Monitor you'll see both, but I suspect if you type 'emby server' you'll miss one.

So far this has the app working fine as far as recordings and such, but it seems like something is amiss, could this be happening to you too Meatball? While I'm at it, is this still normal?

This is with 4.3.1.0

So it sounds similar/related. I don’t have emby running on another machine simultaneously however when I originally setup Emby to test, I ran it on unraid (no issues). I wanted to get familiar/comfortable with Emby before I moved my shares from Plex over. So I did that, was great and moved to Mac with the goal that this would be my new Emby dedicated media server machine and bring my shares over.

When I originally opened this thread I was on the stable Emby release for Mac but restarting Emby while the Mac was running was impossible as outlined in my first post (The issue was common among Emby Mac users.)

Someone on this thread said the beta solved the issue for him. So now I’m on 4.3.4 (beta). Restarting from the menu bar has improved however now I’m regularly not getting Emby to start at boot and if it doesn’t launch, I can’t shut it down to restart it.

As I mentioned some part of Emby is still running in this scenario; if I try to install a new copy or even delete it to start over, I get the error ‘you can’t delete Emby because it is currently open/running’ etc.

However in this scenario now there’s nothing listed in activity monitor to force quit and no evidence of Emby running that I can see. So I’m basically back to square one where I have to reboot to start Emby.

I’m anxious for this to get resolved as I’m very ready to move on from plex. Aside from this issue it’s been great.

I will give this another look. I just haven't been able to reproduce it anymore.

thanks Luke. I’ll see if I can reproduce the issue while recording it so you can see it.

It doesn’t happen 100% of the time but it’s not uncommon so I should be able too

You'll always get two because we put the tray icon in a separate process.

That sounds familiar. Still, having to quit the other in the Activity Monitor feels like something isn't working right. Not really a big deal since that only has to be done for updates.

Thanks!

Yea i get that and that's what I'm still trying to chase down why that is only happening in some environments. Thanks for the info.

Funny since the day I reposted this (Jan 17) it hasn't happened (beta release). Maybe it was an aberration.

If it does happen again I'll review and share my logs. Either way it's definitely a big improvement.

I have Emby server running on a Mac Mini 2012 with High Sierra (never bothered to upgrade to Mojave like my other Macs, probably should).  Have had no issues rebooting Emby server, it does take several minutes though, but I don't have to reboot the macOS.

Interesting. Mine is an ongoing battle. It all revolves around launching at boot or restarting, neither seems to happen consistently.

I can’t restart the app without booting entire machine, ever. The most recent beta seems to make this worse. Maybe dB is corrupted.

I just upgraded the Mini to Mojave. Emby is running fine, able to restart the server no problem. I’m guessing you have a corrupt database or install. You might try backing up your media, and completely uninstalling (using an app like AppCleaner) and reinstall.

Yup, did exactly that and it’s night/day better. Once I read your experience was different I came to the same conclusion that something was corrupted.

When I wiped it out and reinstalled it I could see it was way more responsive. I was able to restore my previous config and so far so good.

Thanks for chiming in.
