Missing Thumbnails

I have a vintage Roku, Model 2500X. It has been working great for 7 years and suddenly has a problem showing the thumbnail photos or labels on the various menus. For example, when I open Netflix, instead of the home page/menu, I get a line of grey boxes where the little photos should be. Also, on the top row for navigation, there are no labels so I can't find "My List" or "Search" except by trial and error. This only happens on Netflix and Prime. Other channels are OK. I have put in all Roku updates. When it happened yesterday, I totally logged off Roku, all the way to HDMI1. This worked yesterday, but the problem is back. I don't want to have to logon twice every day. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi.  Perhaps you should report this to Roku but it sounds like a network issue of some sort.

Are you using Emby?

Since my Roku is old, the support site says they "no longer support this model". I searched the Roku site but cannot find a support phone or email address. I sent the problem to Emby in hopes that another member would know something about it. Optimum says it would not be an issue caused by them.

If you're on a really old Roku model then that also means you've got a really old version of our app. Is purchasing a newer Roku something that would be an option for you?

I just updated the roku software. Aside from this issue, it works fine so don't want to purchase another at this time.  I'm going to try calling Netflix.

Thanks for your response

He's not running our app.  Was just looking for help from other Roku users.

beelloyd - I'm afraid that if Roku has stopped supporting that model that you will have no choice but to scrap it but hope you find a suitable solution.

The old Roku SDKA which is what those older apps are written in do not support compression of the texture memory. It also cannot FIFO buffer the first out and newest in and at least flicker. It will just stop to display images on that SDKA. The only way to fix it is to use an SD card in the SD slot. Then it will bestow the app extra memory on the device because it can offload the space the PKG of the app takes. In the same way android lets you move the "extra bits" of an android app to the SD card. On Roku just the PKG goes there since that is always compiled at run time for everybody on their Roku.

The issue you have is the texture memory on those older units is 20MB. Each images takes up 4 bytes per pixel. Everything showing on-screen even Roku SDKA elements share this space. Some of the Roku SDKA elements are greedy and wasteful of texture memory.

You can likely fix this with an SD card if the 2500x has an SD card slot otherwise that device is near its EOL (end-of-life). You can remember if for the good times. It it like your grandpa is. He can't run a marathon anymore but in his day he was "the best". The same can be said of the 2500x. It's 15 minutes is unfortunately up. Time is not forgiving and does not make exceptions for anyone or anything. You will grow old. People will dispose of you. Devices are just like people.

The problem is the percentage % of the Roku userbase still using 2500x is below what is considered survivable or economically viable. It is dwindling and they set a date for end of support. Roku then advises their key partners when to twilight said devices and get their userbase to move over to newer Roku devices that are much more capable and support modern features. Such as full animations, rotations, zooms, fades, and all the other wonderful things new Roku devices can do.
