Can't get subtitles to display on multiple Samsung TVs

Title says it all. Can't get subtitles to play on samsung tvs. I have two LCD Samsung TVs and an older DLP Model Samsung TV which uses chromecast.

  • I've allowed the Emby server to download them from OpenSubtitles.org
  • I've also downloaded them manually from there and other sources.
  • I've used vbScript to convert the SRT files from ascii to utf-8.
  • Most movies in my library have both *.eng.srt AND *.srt files
  • I've tried adding a subtitle file with the extension *.eng.forced.srt and *.forced.srt
  • When I use BubbleUPNP to play the movies the subtitles are displayed.
  • My QNAP NAS is also running Serviio Media Center. Serviio is also able to display subtitles on these TVs
  • I've toggled various combinations of settings to no avail.
  • I've gotten a few of the above ideas from searching forums

Because all the above failed I've decided to post here and ask for help.

Is there something I am missing?

Hi, and welcome! The best thing to do is supply the info requested in how to report a media playback issue.

It sounds like you're talking about both Chromecast and Dlna, or which one? I'm not aware of any subtitles issues with Chromecast right now, but it's always possible there is an issue with Dlna, since it unfortunately requires individual testing on every device that we want to support.

Yes, I had previously found the link you're mentioning. That link was why I posted here. I did not post the Emby log files because I didn't know where to find them and how to retrieve them.

When I try to SSH/SFTP to my Qnap NAS I get 'Algorithm Negotiation Failed'

I did find a backdoor way to retrieve the log file though.

I've attached it to the OP.

Hi, welcome. In your log it looks like the TV never even attempted to download them. perhaps they weren't selected? in the web interface make sure to configure your defaults by clicking user icon in top right -> playback settings.

Let us know if that helps, thanks.

Thanks for your response. I am pretty sure that I went over the settings several times. The setting you are referring to is set correctly. I guess. So I have provided screen shots of it and other subtitle related settings.

I've also attached a new log after trying to replay subtitles subsequent to having re-verified the settings I've taken the screenshots of. Also to add to the things that I've tried, I've performed a factory reset on one of the TVs and this allowed it to play subtitles briefly but it stopped working again when the tv was power-cycled. Subsequent attempts at factory resets failed to restore the ability to play subtitles.

try deleting your custom samsung profile and just using the built in one. i thought samsung needed the captioninfoex mode which the built-in profile uses. it works on my 2015 samsung at least.

I tried that. It's why there is a custom profile now because the built in one didn't work
