First and foremost I want to say thank you to developers for bringing us Emby on the Apple TV.

I realize this is still in very early development and things will change and improve and I thought I would share a few things I would to see improved.

Home Screen:
This is where I think there is too much wasted space. In fact the whole top half of the screen. I would like to see the Emby logo and time moved up closer to the top and profile and search button. This would allow libraries and latest releases categories to be fully viewable without needing to scroll down to see them. Utilizing space I think is very important for navigation and looks so much nicer instead of looking like it was thrown together quickly.

Descriptions (text)
Quite often the text is very hard to read due to the fanart. I definitely love the fanart and logo combined for the background but what I would like to see some permanent dimming behind the text to make it more readabe. A nice little transparency dimming box like we see on other clients would do the trick. Also just dimming of the fanart would work.

There are a few other little things that really aren't worth me mentioning that I know will be addressed at some point but those two are the main things I want to bring up. Sorry if any of this sounded insulting to developers because it wasn't meant to be and just giving my input for improvements on this already great client.

Really looking forward to changes to come.
Keep up the good work and thanks again to everyone working on this project.

The backdrops are actually already dimmed.  In fact, we had to write a special process to accomplish that on this platform.

However, it is a compromise because we don't want to make darker backgrounds so dark that they don't add anything which means that some brighter or busier backgrounds may show through a little too much.  What we have now appeared to be the best compromise for most of the situations.

There are still quite a few fanart types that don't work well reading text. Don't you think it would be a good idea as I said to use a dimming transparency in the text areas? This is common on a lot of clients and works quite well and would solve the problem and still looks very nice. Plex does this as well as your android tv client among others.

That is really needed for this client to be complete and not cause eye strain.

Please consider it I'm sure the vast majority would agree with me as I have great eyesight and still have trouble with certain backgrounds. That would solve it.

You could boost the font size too. That would increase visibility. The descriptions in that font size have enough for approx 9 line x 70 characters = 630 characters total before scrolling would be required. Maybe reduce the lines to 6 and characters per line reduce to 60 and increase the font size. This is supposed to be a leanback/10ft device. Not everyone has perfect 20/20 vision. The fellow is correct it does make this a disadvantage for users which is making the text harder to read.

We are using an Apple-provided template for that screen so all the layouts and fonts are to their spec.

As for the background dimming only under the text field, we were not able to discover any way to do that with the technology we are using here.  If someone can find it when we couldn't, then please let us know how :)

Can you please confirm?  The version is displayed on the dashboard.

Also, what OS?

Thanks.

I'm at work right now but I just installed the server fresh two days ago so obviously it should be the newest version.

Also I'm running Windows 10. AppleTV 4 is also updated to the latest.

Thanks

Okay, when you get the chance, please restart your server and then post the log because I think something is wrong on your server end.  Perhaps our image processing module is not loading.

Here is what that very same screen looks like for me.  This explains why you were having such trouble :).

And first make sure you're running the latest version of Emby Server.

@@ebr what if we attempt a custom style like the other stuff we were looking into?

if you're referring to client-side dimming then yes feel free to play with it.

Yeah for the background image that would be fine.

Honestly, I now prefer the entire background being dimmed as opposed to just a block behind the actual text.

Well ImageMagik is loading fine and we are requesting the image with a dimming layer.  No idea why it isn't working for you...

Very strange. Could it be related to the HDMI output setting on the Apple TV? I have it set to auto. I can't see it being TV settings because nothing is overly bright and my picture is the way it should be. What else can I do? Maybe someone else has some ideas because obviously something is wrong.

Thanks once again for trying to help me, with any luck we can figure this out.

I'm wondering if it's backlighting on my TV. Can you please send me a screen capture of the home screen set to dark theme which is what I use. I want to compare and see if it is lighter or darker than what i see.

I'm wondering if everything is brighter than it should be and not just the fanart.

Never mind I played with my backlighting and other settings on the TV and makes absolutely no difference. Definitely a fanart issue only.
