Secure Multi Site Streaming without VPN

Hi Guys,

I have a problem I am trying to solve. A problem which I am sure many of you have, but I am unable to find a solution that I am happy with.

I'd like to give my mother and father access to my Emby Server. I sit on an 100/40Mb/s link so I am not concerned about bandwidth. They have a Google Chromecast so they are able to install the Emby App.

What I am concerned about is doing this securely. I would normally just setup a site to site VPN but that is going to be too complicated for them to deal with if things go down and I don't want to be on 24/7 support. I could just secure Emby with a user-id and password and open Emby up on the firewall and then connect to it from their Emby App from the Chromecast.

Question though, is this secure? I don't like the idea of opening any media applications up when the only barrier to entry is just a userid and password. Also, if I was happy with that solution I am not sure if the stream is encrypted.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this? I really don't want to switch to (or install parallel as the case will be) Plex.

Thanks

Hello Danioj,

over the past weeks there have been a number of improvements in the (android and ios) app to allow streaming over https (accepting self signed certs most prominently). I've read some bits over the forum that ssl handling is different for Chromecast, but don't recall were exactly.

there isn't any way to make chromecast accept self-signed certs so the only way is with a trusted cert.
