Hey guys.

Im having problems with the android app as of recently. I have been using it with great succes for some time now but in the last week or so when i start playback in the app i only get the audio track and no video. This happens both locally on wifi over http and externally over https.
I have attached 2 logs from the app and a screenshot.
When using the webclient on my phone everything works as expected both on and off lan.
Server is running Version 3.0.5934.0 and phone is running the latest beta (2.6.61) however the problem started when running the release version

Thanks

Do you have another display connected to the device? The log seems to show that is playing on that display.

This is the log statement:

15:29:34.722 [main] INFO App - Showing presentation on display: Display id 1: DisplayInfo{"test", uniqueId "virtual:com.joaomgcd.join,10145,test,0", app 1080 x 1920, real 1080 x 1920, largest app 1080 x 1920, smallest app 1080 x 1920, 60.0 fps, supportedRefreshRates [60.0], rotation 0, density 480 (480.0 x 480.0) dpi, layerStack 1, appVsyncOff 0, presDeadline 16666666, type VIRTUAL, state OFF, owner com.joaomgcd.join (uid 10145), FLAG_PRESENTATION}, DisplayMetrics{density=3.0, width=1080, height=1920, scaledDensity=3.0, xdpi=480.0, ydpi=480.0}, isValid=true

Yes it like it could be coming from another app by joaomgcd

I did catch that in the log but removing Join (the app from joaomgcd) didnt seem to resolve it. I'll try again, and contact Joao as well!

can you provide a sample file? also, I'm not sure you read the thread because you're not having "this problem".

Yea i had a chat with the developer of join and it seemed the app didn't exit correctly after taking a screenshot which presented the virtual screen for emby to play on. A restart of the phone fixed it.

As Luke said your problem doesn't seem related as this was with every file

I'll look into creating a sample. I read some of the thread and my problem seemed similar which is why I didn't create a new thread.

Great, thanks.

that can't be a transcoding log for the android app because for android we transcode to mkv, not mp4.

Ok, it's direct playing. there's not much we can do other than force transcoding if libvlc just can't handle it.

how high is the bitrate? does this happen with all h265 content? do you have any lower bitrate material you can test with for comparison?

Bitrate isn't that high. It isn't all x265 content but I've noticed a number of shows and movies. I've attached the mediainfo for Beneath the Planet of the Apes (doesn't have video) and Superman Returns (has video). I'm not sure why one would play and not the other.

I try playing over a cell connection to see if that made a difference (it didn't).

The problem is that VLC doesn't have the correct filters.

I don't know but files will play direct and transcoded via Web client. A black screen w/ audio usually means the device doesn't the video format.

I can now play the files using VLC for Android so once ET is updated with that version I imagine I'll be able to stream them as well.

I see the same symptoms as well - *some* MP4 files are not playing the video back using the Emby client on both Android (Sony Xperia Z5) and AndroidTV (nVidia ShieldTV). Most of my testing (and use) is on AndroidTV - I have tried the beta version as well and this has the same symptom. The beta version of Emby on AndroidTV has an option to use an external player to playback videos, and I have installed VLC to use this as my external player. Videos playback as expected (audio and video present) with this option selected.

Choosing to use an external player for video playback does disable certain features (like setting DTS for direct playback via a device that supports this). I would prefer to use the Emby player to playback videos.

This behaviour has definitely changed recently, as some MP4s had been previously watched and now cannot be viewed. From the earlier discussion it is suspected that there is a fault/incompatibility with libvlc as shipped with Emby?

Happy to provide any further details/info as necessary.
