Best method for up-to-date/accurate title identifcation

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a definitive answer on the best way to accomplish accurate, up-to-date info on my libraries. More specifically, movies (but I assume it would apply to shows as well)

Currently, I'm running the most recent (stable) releases for Server as well as the Emby for Kodi add-on within Kodi (also current, stable release). I can't put my finger on where I'm going wrong. Big picture, I utilize SAB as my downloader, with Couch Potato and Sonarr for movies and TV shows respectively. I allow both to rename what they snag. I also allow Emby to identify the items in each library. I should specify this typically isn't an issue with upcoming/future additions via CP; it seems to be an issue only with existing files.

There are a number of items in my movie library that do not display correctly; bad filename (not the "exact" title), or extraneous characters, etc. Shouldn't either CP or Emby catch this, and fix?

When in Kodi, I don't see a way to forcibly scan and correct the items within the library, so I assume it is because I'm using the Emby add-on to view the content. Whereas if I added the folders themselves, and bypassed the Emby add-on altogether, the scrapers would take care of that.

Is that accurate? If so, what is the de facto method for automatic file renaming and identification? When your library has hundreds of items, the last thing you want to do is go through the Metadata editor and manually update all the outliers.

Don't do any metadata management with CP or Sonarr, but let Emby do it all.

You can force update a specific item via the emby metadata manager. You can either refresh the metadata/artwork for the item, this will send an update to the addon in Kodi. Or if it's already properly identified, then you can just hit Save instead, which should force refresh the item in Kodi.

My issue is that I have multiple existing files that either aren't named correctly in the first place (thus Emby isn't properly identifying them, or CP isn't), or were improperly identified at some point.

An example would be X-Men: First Class. The actual filename has something appended on the end (prior to ".mkv") that isn't allowing it to be properly identified automatically. CP probably doesn't fuss with it, because it's already been moved from the folder it "watches" into a destination folder where all "completed" movies end up. Said "completed" folder is the only place Emby looks for movies whatsoever, so from that angle there aren't 2 hands in the cookie jar at the same time.

I guess I'm just wondering how to forcibly have Emby (or by some other means) scan all files in a given directory, and update as necessary. The reason it bugs me is because in Kodi it doesn't display a proper movie poster, because it doesn't know what that movie is. So it displays a still-frame from within the file itself.

Is CP renaming your files according to emby naming conventions? For movies it should ideally be moviename (year)/moviename (year).ext

Your issue is unrelated to the emby for kodi add-on. I can move this thread to the server forums if you want. You should get more assistance this way. Essentially, if the content is messed up in the webclient, then it's a server issue, which seems to be your case.

If I'm reading that correctly, the format would be a folder for each movie, with an identically-named file resting inside? If so, I don't have CP configured that way. I didn't want individual folders on a per-file basis, so I just use a "Movies" folder which contains them.

No problem. I wasn't certain, but I was hoping by placing it in the Kodi section there might be someone who knew of a means to do this within Kodi (I.E. a scraper or something else).

The add-on is it's own "scraper". It pulls server content via api and adds it to your Kodi database directly. Kodi does not do anything, except playback your content. If the information the server provides to the add-on is incorrect, then it needs to be fixed there, and everything should fall into place in Kodi.

I've had a few hiccups with episode metadata, where it would just not identify the content. It would still leave the season and episode number in the title. I don't know why it does this sometimes, but since I haven't updated my server in quite a while, I suspect the issue has probably been resolved since then. Anyway, I will move your thread. It probably has to do with how your metadata settings are set in your emby server, but server experts should be able to help you sort out this issue.  :)

It actually makes things easier and tidier if you ever intend to take advantage of features such as trailers and theme videos/music

Plus makes identifying items much more reliable

Its actually a lot "tidier" in my opinion even if you don't want those features as you can have a single list of folders showing all your movies when looking at the file system vs a list that is up to 10 times that long with all of the images and other metadata files lumped in there.

If I were to go that route, what is the fastest way to revamp the libraries I have in place, from an automated standpoint?
