About Emby / Plex / Sync

Hi !

I'm a new user of Emby. I was a Plex user but I'm I like the open-source spirit so I heard about Emby.

So, I think Emby is like Plex: nice, beautiful and very professional.

The only thing on Plex that I dislike is about to pay 100e about the Sync option.

So I thought: why don't I try Emby ? Maybe it will have the same function but... FREE !

And I realize that I have to buy it too (same cost of course).

So this is my question : Why should I have to use Emby if Plex do the same things and if I have to buy a Premium account to have the same premium options ?

It's like to pay premium account on Linux to have advanced option. Really I miss something...

:-)

Hi, and welcome. We are open source and community driven, but we would not be able to be competitive if everything were free. We are a direct competitor of theirs, just as google is to microsoft, verizon to comcast, etc. We hope that you choose us because you like us better, and you like the community, but not because you would like everything to be free, as that is not a model in which we would be able to survive.

OK. Thank you for your answer.

I understand what you say. I thought that Emby was opensource and free like Linux. I read that on many website and review so this is not totally true.

Again I understand that you have to live with your work but for me I will not pay 100e for only a Sync option. I try Emby only for that reason, I was wrong.

Good luck for Emby, it is very great. But I go back to Plex.

Thanks.

Emby is free...free as in freedom, not beer.  In my mind, open-source does not necessarily equal free (depending on the license and it actually does if you are willing to keep up a patch for yourself to remove it).  Open-source simply means that anyone has access to the code and can audit it themselves for security and privacy concerns.  I stand behind Emby because it is open-source and I know that the people writing the code are not trying to gather all of my data.

Take a look at the Ardour audio suite.  It is open-source, yet they charge users to be able to download pre-built binaries.  People can still view the source code in their git repository and build it from source; the Ardour devs just have to have a way to make money to continue work on the project.

Just something to think about: would you rather support devs who are keeping all of the source code for their projects open and viewable by the public or would you rather support devs who are keeping their source code closed and not letting the public audit their code?  I am not going to tell you that Emby will solve all your problems.  No software will.  I will tell you that the software is still in heavy development, the devs are much more responsive to issues than Plex's devs, and the community here is fantastic.

@thefirstofthe300: I understand and I agree with you. There was a misunderstanding on what I read on website about Emby was free.

That's all ;)

Hey there i am a plex user ,also have been debating whether to upgrade to plex pass.. but then i found emby and put a hold on that . I am very interest in live tv where plex is no future plans. I feel i have reached my limit with plex,   I also am trying to figure out that is free for emby vs the pay account.   I need parental controls, sync, etc and would love live tv

I love PLEX and paid for PLEX PASS for LIFE $100, but if EMBY does the same PLUS live TV I will be switching to EMBY and will pay the $100 to them also.  Going to try EMBY out next week once my HDHR Prime arrives.

Parental controls are part of the core server download. No payment needed. You might be interested in this blog post about it:
