Windows 10 - Media Center crashes (not responding) after playing mor ethan one file

HI All,

I am not sure where to start with my issue. Everything has been working fine for weeks and no system change have been made (other that EMBY auto updates).

I am using Windows 10 with MCE and Shark Codec. For the last few day after I watch one video in EMBY then select another it starts to play but no audio. If I stop it MCE crashes (reports not responding in task mgr) I can't see any errors/details in the windows event viewer.

Is there a way to workout what going on ? and if its Windows 10/MCE, Shark Codec or EMBY ?

Thanks

Mike

Well as it a hack to get MCE into Windows 10 in the first place it's going to be difficult to figure it out.  I would check the usual video card drivers, and see if uninstalling shark codec pack and using lav filters fixes the problem.  Shark codec pack while great has way too many parts that can go wrong (IMHO).  You could all so try playing it in media player.  Do you have anything else running that might be trying to lock onto the sound card?

Is it a particular file type mp4, avi, etc that does it or is it all files?

HI, Thanks for the response. I know is a hack it adds a bunch of possible issues but was hoping for a place to start or rule out.

The files play fine in Media Player and are all MKV but just about all my files are so that’s not to say it only MKV its just I don’t have many non MKV files.

The sound card point is interesting in that it could be something accessing the sound card then crashing the player using the sound card but I don’t think that’s it as the issue also has happened when the sound was fine but I press pause and I can see the video still playing in the background under the pause logo of EMBY but MCE has crashed so I can press anything else.

It would be good to know what things have the power to cause an issue like this so I can rule them out. My current break down is:

I use “MCE Reset Toolbox” to change the start menu – I assume that wouldn’t affect payback within EMBY

I use “Shark Codec” – I assume it could affect playback in EMBY but was working fine for weeks and wasn’t changed also files are fine in Media Player and its only when opening a second file so I am thinking not likely this

I use “EMBY Server” – I assume (but not really sure) changes and updates to this wouldn’t affect EMBY in MCE as I can see the library and it’s a local library.

I use “EMBY for MCE” – This can affect playback, update may have had an impact.

I use “Windows 10 MCE” - This can affect playback as it’s a hack and I did have permissions issue on my TV card but again it’s been working for weeks without any changes (although windows update could have done something)

Happy to hear any thoughts, I will check the EMBY Classis log tonight to see if it has any answers and upload here.

Thanks

Mike

I would honestly recommend using Windows 7 for WMC, unless you have a particular reason to upgrade. The hacked workarounds are always going to give you trouble.

I found the Win10 MCE experience the best of all versions with the extra playback formats from Win10 it was very stable and fast until this issue. So if this isn't related to win10 its a good option as you get the latest speed and support not to mention not having the reminders to usage to win10 all the time.

My log is attached. It look a few starts and stops to encounter the crash so its around 2016-02-10 19:30:21 in the log. I cant see any issue (not that I am an expert) it seems it recognised the payback stopping when playback crashed.

Can anyone confirm the log is ok and its not likely EMBY for MCE causing the issue ?

Thanks again

Mike

Not had any issues with Windows 10 and WMC at all other than a couple of settings in shark codecs which I also use which caused some weirdness with no audio etc.

Haven't looked at your logs, but try disabling "Windows media foundation" in the Shark settings first and see if that helps. If I remember I'll post up the settings I use with Shark later on tonight.

You just have to realise that WMC is 100% not supported in Windows 10. End of. Any solution to your problem is likely to be as much of a hack as was geting WMC onto 10 in the first place. Where exactly would you start with a problem like this? You could try some of the forums that are working towards getting WMC running on 10. Other than that, as was previously suggested, go back to Win7.

As promised, sorry for the delay in getting to this.

As I say this may not be the cause of your issues, however I had at least one of the issues you mention because of a setting in Shark that wasn't right. After a fair bit of playing and tweaking the below gives me perfect usage for everything including live TV on Emby on WMC in Windows 10.

May or may not help, but worth checking.

I was going to say it's probably an issue with your codecs.  I steer clear of Sharks pack.  FFDShow and Win7Filtertweaker.

One important note for Win10, you will need to take ownership of the Windows/SysWoW64 folder and also Windows/System32 folder or you will not be able to disable any of the built in decoders as they are locked for editing permissions by trusted installer.

Have a read of this so you understand what happens when you tick these boxes in sharks codecs, it's similiar to the win7DSFilterTweaker tool.
