Help with Transcoding stuttering

I'm getting started trying to access my media outside of my home network.

My Emby server is version 3.0.5821.0 and is definitely accessible over the internet.  My upload speed is 6 Mbps (Comcast).  I've specified  a max internet streaming bitrate of 5 Mbps in the server.  I guess this means that most of my media will end up transcoded.

Playing a movie yesterday over  internet via Chrome as a client was subject to random stuttering where video would pause momentarily before resuming, making it un-watchable.  Here is the transcode log:

transcode-e01ed668-ce64-44a4-8a1d-4042ffbaa2fe.txt

Would momentary pauses have to do with  "Parse error..." lines in the log?  Any additional troubleshooting steps?

Thanks

Steve

Hi, welcome. The issue is your cpu is not getting fast enough transcoding performance in order to achieve playable video. The content is about 8mbps so you're unable to direct stream the video. What I would try to do is see if you can increase your bitrate setting high enough so that the video stream can be stream copied. this will result in dramatically improved transcoding performance at the cost of a larger output size. I would try to see if you can push the limits of your connection and see if that will deliver fast enough to be playable.

@@Luke,

Will try this. Can't wait for Google Fiber to hit town, if they ever do.  I've had it with Comcast.

Is the setting I want to adjust: Playback=>Streaming=>Internet streaming bitrate limit (Mbps) ?

Does disk write performance on the drive assigned the "Transcoding temporary path" make a difference?  It currently points to an SSD, which can have slow write speeds.

Thanks again.

Personally, I would put that setting back to the default value of empty, then in the app setting under user icon -> settings, make sure the web app's streaming bitrate is set to Auto. Our out of box defaults have gotten pretty accurate and most users should just leave them as they are, unless there is a specific reason why they need to be changed.

Correction: when i say web app settings, i really mean whatever app you're trying to use when away from home. so if it's mobile chrome for example, then the settings in the web app on that device.

Hi Luke,

I think I have a similar problem that could bring a new vision of the problem... I'm just trying to listen the live tv from my brother home ( 10 mbps upload limit ) on my Chromecast at my home (over the internet) and here I have a 15 mbits connection on download.

I set the max streaming bitrate to 6 mbits to be safe but when I monitor my bandwidth on my router, my WAN port download 10 mbits always without interuption. I got many stuttering and sound cutting.

It seems that the server does not take care of the speed that we put. It seems to always trying to send at the max bitrate that it can.

BTW, it is not a CPU problem, and also, when I check the main server page, when I put my mouse on the Chromecast logo, the server tell me that the encoding bitrate is 4 Mbits... but it not true. By download run to 10 Mbit constant which represent the MAXIMUM Upload bandwidth of my brother... Could be a clue?

Thanks
