Closed Captioning Badly Needed for Live TV

I've tried WMC, KODI, PLEX, and EMBY. I found EMBY very impressive. I happily paid $99.99 to help developers to continue improving this awesome EMBY software.

Anyway, I really love Live TV, Schedules Direct Guide, and its built-in recording capability.  I use SiliconDust HDHomerun Connect device that carry CC (Closed Captioning for Hearing-Impaired) data.

Sadly, this Live TV does not have a feature to allow us to enable CC. My son informed me that he recorded one TV program and used an external VLC player and it worked fine.  It's much a hassle using the external player. Otherwise, we have enjoyed movies with perfect subtitles.

It is my sincere hope that Emby developers will improve Live TV to include the essential CC capability in near future.

Keep up with your excellent work on the software.

Thanks,

David

Hi Luke,

I've seen that Emby server and Emby Theater application have been continuously improved. I am very pleased. Can you tell me when the planned feature - closed captioning will be available for Live TV? I sincerely hope the needed feature won't be forgotten or ignored.

There is a nice option for Live TV Settings is to allow us to enable converting from .ts formatted files to mp4 formatted files on the fly. I tested the converted mp4 file with a VLC media player and discovered that it did not have closed captioning. I found an excellent HandBrake video conversion utility program which I used to select "All remaining closed captions track" and "burn-in" options to convert from Live TV .ts files to mp4 files to avoid video transcoding. I can play this mp4 files with any media players showing "open captioning".  Would it possible to have new options added to the Live TV settings to allow us to add all remaining closed captions track and burn-in?

Thanks,

David

I'd like to touch this topic - I noticed the closed caption gets dropped when converting to MP4 (live TV recording). I wonder if it's feasible to add "sub-checkbox" to indicate whether to include closed captioning? At this point, we still have to use TS files to watch with closed captioning.

In addition, I'll have to echo David's comment on enabling closed captioning for live TV (either live or recorded). At this point, we have to rely on VLC which doesn't do well on weaker processors especially when subtitles are enabled.

This is also a must in our home. Wife is hard-of-hearing a relies on captions. I'm an Emby Supporter. Finally got Emby's Live TV up and running and think it's fantastic, but no captions is a deal-breaker for us. So back to WMC for the time being.

Luke,

You replied "It was the planned feature" on January 8, 2016 and again replied "It has not been forgotten" on April 28, 2016. I thought you understood CC for hearing-impaired.

Right now Live TV & Recorded TV lack this important CC (Closed Captioning) On/Off option. That's the big problem. TS file does have an embedded CC (Closed Captioning).

On Live TV/Settings, it indicates "Recording will be converted on the fly to MKV on your devices. This feature requires an active Emby Premiere subscription".

Why don't you ask one of your developers to add a new line "Preserve original CC when converting records."  This current on the fly conversion has dropped embedded CC. Some months ago I tested an external VLC player to play the converted MKV file, it did not display CC at all, but CC will appear if the VLC player plays TS files.

It would be nice to have the CC On/Off option on Live TV and also Recorded TV so we don't have to run the stand-alone VLC player to play the TS files outside of Emby!

Hope this makes sense to you.

David
