[Request] Emby for Kodi syncs local media progress

This request is a little out in the left field but hear me out.

I travel for a living and most hotel connections are insufficient for streaming video through a web browser using the Emby frontend. This of course makes Emby for Kodi unusable for streaming from my home to Kodi on my laptop in a hotel.

My request is to sync the progress, completion and/or deletion of my media from Emby for Kodi to Emby Server when watching local media that is not on the same machine as the original media. When I travel, I snag a handfull of TV episodes and movies before I leave home. I then play the media locally through Kodi, this provides a convenient way to resume where I left off as compared to playing through VLC. What is inconvenient is not having that progress propogate to my home computer running Emby Server. I have to go to a web browser and manually search for and delete an episode or movie, or I have to try to remember the timestamp of where I left off and make that change on my Kodi setup at home (which has Emby for Kodi - and of course - saves the progress to Emby Server).

(this all sounds much clearer in my head, let me diagram it)

HTPC=Emby Server + Kodi + Emby for Kodi

Laptop=Copied TV episode or movie to local drive + Kodi + Emby for Kodi (but Emby for Kodi is placed into a monitoring status only, it is not used to stream or transcode)

Laptop being viewed away from home but not fast enough to stream through Emby browser frontend -> so you watch local content on laptop with Kodi and Emby for Kodi which is in monitor status only -> the progress of the local suspended (paused) media is saved within Kodi -> the progress of the local suspended (paused) media is sent to Emby on the HTPC where the progress is saved (or the media is deleted if deleted locally on the laptop)

What OS is your laptop? The win 8.1/10 app will do this + makes it simple to transfer media too

Windows 8.1 on the laptop. I hadn't thought of using the Win8 Emby app being such a big fan of Kodi. So - the Win8 Emby app will read the local laptop media but will send the progress updates to Emby server on the HTPC?

The Windows 8/10 client supports Emby sync, which will take care of both the cooying and tracking of playback.

I just checked out the Win8/10 app and I don't see any settings to allow it to play from local content, it appears to be streaming only.

The intent of the op request was to get the Emby for Kodi addon to sync the progress of local content to Emby Server that lives on a separate computer that resides on a separate network.

Yes your request is not unreasonable and indeed it is one of the features on the trello board todo list. Maybe add your vote to the feature and in time one of us may pick it up.

You sync content from your server to your laptop via the app ...it is then stored locally and you can play it while being offline and the app will update watched/resume status to your server when it next has a connection.

I believe this is exactly what you are requesting. in fact i have used it for the exact same reason and it worked great. I even used emby sync to copy content to my laptop while i was away from my hotel room so i could watch it locally/offline at my leisure later

It does not make sense for it to work with just any local files tho as how would the app and the server know whether it's the same file or even if the local file matches anything on your server? And of course it must be on your server to match anyway

AH! Now I get it. Understood. Thanks all for the replies, I appreciate it.
