Path Substitution

I've set up some path substitutes along these lines:

D:\Movies \\SRV\Movies and TV\Movies

This works perfectly from all the clients that connect to my server over the network, so movies and TV shows display 'Direct' as their quality setting whilst playing.

However, when using Emby on the server to display media from itself, the 'Direct' quality setting disappears and I only get a choice of streaming qualities. Furthermore, I get buffering and stuttering which doesn't occur using VLC to watch the same files directly.

I don't really understand what's happening here.

Hi,

Web browsers have only limited format support. When your media doesn't match the browser's supported formats, we have to use a process called transcoding to convert it on the fly. You can learn more about that in our wiki here:

I'm having an issue getting the path substituion to work right. I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong.

My Movie folder is located on my UNRAID server Kraken.

I mapped the drive to TITAN which has Plex Server installed under Z:\Movies. I added this folder as a Movie library folder.

How would I apply the path substituion?

I tried:

Z:\Movies -----> \\Kraken\Movies

This didn't work. I keep Direct streaming which I don't want. I really want to get Direct Play working again for my new Nvidia Shield

Just use the unraid path as the path to your movies in Emby, mapping the path to a drive and then using path substitution is completely redundant and overly complicated

I did this and the server is still direct streaming.

Yup, spot on.  I assumed when watching a series that the encoding would remain the same, and the video encoding did - but by sheer coincidence I was streaming AAC audio to my other computer and DTS on the server, so the server was transcoding.

Now I'll just find a way to put AAC audio with all my media, on top of their other formats.

Thanks for the help!

If you are using MKV containers, you can use the MKVToolnix to set your AAC stream to be the first audio stream. It should then be used for devices that support it.

I'm using the Emby client on the Shield TV

This app cannot directly access your file system so path substitution does not come into play.  It will direct stream though, which will take very little in the way of resources on the server.

You could try kodi with the emby add-on, that should direct play almost everything

I have it all running but I'm having issues with playback. All my movies start and then stop after about 10 seconds. I need to figure out what is causing that.

Hi there,

Please see our library setup wiki, scroll to the bottom for the path substitution section.

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Library%20Setup

Let us know if that explains it better. For the android apps it currently won't matter whether you set it up or not.
