I noticed that when I use kodi for fire tv, that it plays everything back perfectly. I get DTS, Dolby Digital and so on. It just works. It even displays in DTS and Dolby Digital on my AVR. But when i use the Emby app on the fire tv it still doesnt play dolby digital and even DTS displays as PCM. I just dont understand why kodi can display it but nothing else can. I really like Emby though. I just figured if kodi can play it correctly then it must not be a fire tv issue right? Or am I missing something?

Kodi is a completely custom program and player that includes all its own audio and video decoding software.  So it is able to do things that most other apps will not do on the same platform (because those capabilities don't actually exist on the platform).

However, just because you don't see "DTS" on your receiver display doesn't mean you aren't getting the exact same sound from the two apps.  Our app is simply decoding the compressed DTS track and sending it directly to your AVR as uncompressed PCM.

Oh ok, is there any idea on when dolby digital will work? I do have a lot of dolby digital movies. I have been trying to convert video to another format that works on emby. Which I honestly don't mind using kodi in the mean time though. I do enjoy the work thats being done on emby though.. :)

It is going to take an update to the Fire TV software.  I think there is supposed to be one coming for at least the new generation ones.

Right now, it appears DD pass-thru is broken on anything running under Android 5.1.1.

Anyone know if the update to FireOS fixed the issues with DD? I haven't updated yet, but like rfischer1984, Kodi passes DTS and DD perfectly to my HDMI to optical converter and then to my audio receiver. Kodi may use a custom built player, but passing audio doesn't require a codec...

Emby uses VLC, and correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've gathered from testing on various platforms, VLC for Windows is the only version of the VLC application that has the same kind of support for passthru audio that Kodi does.

EDIT: The above is is all with respect to the old school, non-hdmi Dolby Digital and DTS capable 5.1 audio receiver that I've used for testing.

My first gen FTV I use for testing hasn't updated since Sep 3rd so it isn't even on Fire OS 5 yet.

I haven't checked my 2nd gen box yet to see if it got an update.  Has anyone else confirmed receiving this yet?
