Can not get Emby to install on a Win 2008 ServerQ

Hi -

I dcpromo'd my imars server to a primary domain controller.  When I did that, I noticed that my emby had disappeared.  I don't remember uninstalling it, yet it is clearly gone.  So I went to go reinstall emby.  I downloaded the emby setup program.  Here's where things get silly.

No matter what I do, when I double click on the setup program that is about 432 KB in size (which downloads the program), ABSOLULTE NOTHING happens.  I've checked firewall ports.  I've gone and downloaded the setup program 10-15 times.  I've ran it as an adminsitrator.  I've checked the services running.  Nothing nothing nothing.  I even tried the rundll32 dfshim ClearOnlneAppCache...  Nothing.  I can't figure out how to reinstall emby!

Can someone please throw me a bone here?  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

You absolutely should not run most apps on a domain controller.  Anything that relies on local user accounts for any functions will fail because there effectively aren't any local users on a domain controller.  Dunno how that will impact the Emby setup program but, generally speaking, you don't install server software on your DC.  You let it stay busy being a DC.

Yeah, I don't think our ClickOnce installer will work at all since it is user-account based and then, Emby itself is probably going to have similar issues getting access to media.

I run Emby before on win 2008 R2 DC server without any problem.

With local and small lan, you can run anything on a DC.

But really, now days, no need to use DC for small group as your local lan for home as example.

There's all kinds of reasons to run a DC at home, faster more reliable DNS, group policy to keep the wife and kids from installing stuff they shouldn't or to force them to run updates because they're too lazy to, I could go on and on.  I would never just run a workgroup/homegroup at home.

Good day,

Yes, and the list can on and on for the benefit for running DC, but sorry (personal view) hardly can see the need now days, everyone now either going by tablet/handheld/laptop, even all-in-one pc have beside it mobile router, so they do not need you anymore :) NAS sharing now have it own OS that can apply these rules, I am still a DC guy and when I link my servers, then a DC is a must option.

Back to the thread:

Can you try to apply like media rules at the DC, update to latest SP, install all .NET Framework that allow at that OS, then reboot the PC and try again.

My best

Yea, it's a small at home lan with a DC.    Before I had two servers, one was the DC and the other was the movie server.  Finally, after a good 4-5 years, the DC died.  I didn't see any sense in bringing another back and thought my movie server could also function as a DC given my 5 pc home environment.  But..problems have ensued.  I upgraded my movie server to a DC and didn't uninstall emby first.  I think that was a f up....

I would like to get it to work.  GIven that someone else does it tells me..there's hope.   I'll go install every patch I can find and report back.

Is there a complete version of emby I could download without having to resort to a downloaded internet version?  Figure that might be worth a try since I can't get past the stub.

Ok thanks abodader, jeremy ebr, and death squirrel for your comments.

If you would like try a portable install then you can follow these instructions, but please only do this if you're willing to fight through some issues because we don't currently have a documented procedure for this, and we don't really have the resources to spare for one-off scenarios such as these. So if things go really wrong, we might just have to tell you that it's not going to work on your system.

But you could download the zip of the latest version, Emby.Windows.zip

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases/tag/3.0.5781.3

You'll need the visual studio c++ runtime, 2010 x86 edition, and you'll need the .net framework 4.5 installed first. Then you just unzip and run the exe. You'll probably want to disable automatic updates under Advanced. The server will think it's capable of auto-updated, but it hasn't been tested on a portable install so who knows what will happen.

I run the current emby on a 2012 DC (2012 Essentials).  And clickonce works just fine.  I would have thought it more likely a permissions problem or possibly a .Net issue.  It could also be a policy on DC that stops clickonce from running by default, as on a DC this could be seen as a security risk.  2008 has lots of security when running as a DC if I remember correctly.  Is your DC running in terminal server mode (It shouldn't be, but you never know).
