As the machine my emby server is running on can only do encode at about 70% of real time for HD streams, so being able to direct play from my hdhomerun prime and dvr recordings is something I'd really like to have. Unfortunately the FireTV isn't working as well as I'd hoped for this.I'm possibly considering a Raspberry Pi, but I would prefer something that works out of the box and has a family friendly remote like the FireTV (remote is main reason why I wanted FireTV to work)Not sure if this is really the right forum for this, but it can't hurt to ask here. Edit: I went with Nexus Players, as they were clearanced to $49 at WalMart, and that is impossible to say no to. chali 11 Posted October 17, 2015 Share Posted October 17, 2015 i tried ridiculous many android boxes, but the one im going for now is remix mini (have ordered 8 of them =) it runs remix Os 2.0 (rely awesome compared to standard android) my favourite until a get the remixbox is tronsmart aw80 with 4 gig ram since it can run remix 1.5. the downside, it's fucking expensive compared to remix mini. The Emby for Android TV app runs on any officially supported Android TV devices, such as the Amazon Fire TV, Nexus Player, Nvidia Shield and any TV's running Android TV. The nexus player has no problem with high definition mpeg2 after the update to 6.0 using the live channels/HDHR View app. Live TV playback inside of Emby will not be native and will be a transcoded mess. I'm going to d/l the Emby android app... thinking about making this my "HTPC" and turning my current Win7 HTPC into a TV recording / server -only box in a different room. Anybody know any decent Android app that will play live TV from SiliconDust OTA units? Presumably Emby will play pre-recorded (Media Center WTV files) content OK, but playing live TV seems to be my current gap in the plan... Marc EDIT: I just found out that SiliconDust themselves have their HDHOMERUN View app. I've D/Led it ($0.99) but it doesn't connect to my units yet. Haven't had time to troubleshoot. Hopefully just a firmware thing. EDIT 2: Turns out my early-generation (first and second) HDHomeRuns aren't compatible with the app. I've got an HDHR3-US and a vernerable HDHR-US. Both work fine via Media Center. Neither are supported by the View application on Android (but the View application on Windows wors fine). If I want to use View on Android, I'll need to update to at least an HDHR Extend (cheap on Amazon in the low ~$75 range).. Annoying though. You won't need to use View. So extend will direct stream, but the HDHR3-CC Prime tuner will not direct stream, is that right? Is there a cable card version of the extend? Any of the HDHR tuners that are supported by our internal Live TV should direct stream through the ATV app. (of course non-protected channels only...) Marc_G 92 Posted December 1, 2015 Share Posted December 1, 2015 Thanks for the info. I dug around and figured out the difference between the Connect (~$71 on AMazon) and the Extend (~$120). The extend has built in H264 transcoding making it optimal for streaming live to mobile devices. The difference probably doesn't matter in a DVR (non live streaming) application. What's not clear to me is if I've got an android box (Remix mini) wired into my Ethernet gigabit network (not wifi), in this case do I care about the difference between the extend and the cheaper Connect? But I don't think that is necessary specifically for our app anymore (I have the cheaper Connect model and get direct stream to Fire TV and NP).
