Best way to cleanly and completely uninstall...

Hey folks,

Over the weekend, I got fed up with how little progress I was making with getting Emby setup on my DS1815+. I think it boiled down to the way the NAS deals with permissions and what-not - I think! I was in a world of pain with getting Emby to pick up my libraries. It appeared to scan the media library successfully, but would only ever show one particular library.

Anyhow, I have my media set back up the way I want it now and have uninstalled Emby, but I do want to go back and try getting Emby running again - I like Emby and I want to use Emby    - so quick question to those in the know: how can I be sure that Emby is uninstalled and no remnants, that is traces, of Emby are still hanging about? Like I don't want a new, fresh install of Emby somehow picking up some old database or some old config file.

Presently the way I have uninstalled Emby is simply by reversing the install process.

Kind regards,

Dodgy Bob.

Oh, just as an extra tid-bit...

The reason for asking this was because in my messing around with folder permissions, I thought I had royally messed something up so that the Audio/Photo/Video Station apps could not see and index the files I had told those apps too. And so, in my hunting around for solutions, I came across >> this page (specifically, this post further down in the thread) << on the Synology forums talking about blowing away the PostGresSQL DB and thus wondered if that needed to be done in order to actually start from a perfectly clean slate for starting over with Emby on my Synology NAS.

Any thoughts on this?

In the end, I didn't actually need to because running a manual index from "DSM > Control Panel > Media Indexing" sorted out my issue.

However, since I do want to, well, need to start over with Emby, I was wondering whether this step needed to be performed before I do start or not.

Kind regards,

Dodgy Bob.

What is the media locations for your libraries? From the sounds of your post you are using the Synology Default video folder Video station. Is this correct or are you using your own shared folder eg //diskstation/movies/ ; //diskstation/tv/ ; //diskstation/mp3/ etc

To manually uninstall emby (or other apps) - from personal experience

install Winscp and login to diskatation with root as the username (pw is the same as admin) NOTE:SSH has to be enabled

1. Navigate to /volume1/@appstore then delete the application you want to remove.

2. Navigate to /var/packages see if there is a folder named the same as your app and remove it

3. Navigate to /usr/local see if there is a folder named the same as your app and remove it

Permissions (windows side)....

If you have the Guest user enabled then all UNC connection will be managed with that user.

If you have Guest user disabled then whatever user you use to connect to the NAS is the primary manager.

{Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager is where the list of credentials are to access your NAS or any windows passwords to shares,ftp etc}

Synology Folder Permissions

With WinSCP navigate to /volume1 and locate the folder with your media right click and choose properties, change the permissions Octal to 0777 also check the Set group, owner and permissions recursively (Note: Group/Owner is root)

Synology users and groups.

Default UNS access user is Guest is a part of the users Group

By default the users group Has no Access to any shares (as the top tier of permissions) then in the guest user (2nd tier) you add the read/write permission to any folders you was to have access to.

PGSQL Database fiddling....Why?

Emby uses it's own index .db file.

What are you trying to do?

If you just want to peek inside and try to break it then follow this guide http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=8916#p261328

NOTE: PGSQL is only for Synology internal use from DSM 5 onwards I believe i.e. indexing, Photo, mail station etc.

Have fun!!

Hey Gernash,

Thanks for getting back to me. So. . . .

Yes, I think I was initially using the default 'Video Station' app folders, but when things started to not work, I think I tried setting up my media outside of those default folders, but still had some issues. Anyhow, as of right now, without Emby installed (I didn't get back to it on the weekend as I would have liked as other appointments came up), but with Photo/Audio/Video Station apps installed, my media is now located back inside of these apps default folders.

3. Navigate to /usr/local see if there is a folder named the same as your app and remove it

Is this after uninstalling them via DSM? The purpose here is really just to check and make sure nothing is being left behind. I do not want to reinstall Emby, only to have the new installation of Emby pick up settings from the old installation. I want to make certain I am starting from a clean slate. Either way, I'll check the directory locations you mention here once I'm back home and I'll see if Emby (and the other apps that need to be installed alongside) are cleared out from them all.

Permissions (windows side)....

If you have the Guest user enabled then all UNC connection will be managed with that user.

If you have Guest user disabled then whatever user you use to connect to the NAS is the primary manager.

By default the users group Has no Access to any shares (as the top tier of permissions) then in the guest user (2nd tier) you add the read/write permission to any folders you was to have access to.

So first up, the default users "Administrator" and "User" are disabled in my Synology NAS environment (for security reasons) and preferably, I would like to keep it that way.

Now, in the main data area on my NAS, under "VOLUME1" all folders concerned (i.e. video/audio/photo plus some others I have created) I have, via WinSCP, already set these to 0777 and at this level > "VOLUME1\Video" etc. < owner and group are indeed 'root'. After this level, I cannot remember what is set, but I will check once home from work.

No, no.

As I said in reply to your second post, I am just wanting to make certain that I am starting from a clean slate for the re-install of Emby, thats all. I know that with Windows, sometimes when you uninstall some apps, not all data and/or registry entries are removed and consequently when you re-install the uninstalled app, sometimes it picks up old configuration data. I am trying to avoid this. I don't want to mess around where I don't need to. But in order to achieve that clean slate, if I must do this then I will. Hopefully however it is as you say, that the PGSQL DB is only for Synology's apps. So long as Emby is not writing to it, then I shouldn't have to go into it - right?

Thanks again for getting back to me Gernash, much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Dodgy Bob.

the 3 folders /volume1/@appstore ; /var/packages  ; /usr/local are where the leftover live and they will be named after the package

PGSQL will only contain the Diskstation indexing and Photo thumbnails so not important.

On a side note if you have Guest disabled then you will not be able to use Path substitution unless the device can login to the path with login credentials.

Also the Administrators group I think needs to be enabled as one of the hidden Superusers use it for Synology administration (Don't quote me on this) also if you run the Synology security advisor in business mode it does not ask for this to be disabled.

I assume you are referring to the admin user? (in think it does administrative stuff if you use mail server etc)
