Emby for WMC on XBox 360 With MKV files

Hi-

Ive read this post:

http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/18214-how-to-direct-play-mkvmp4-files-on-an-xbox-360-extender-with-mb3mb-classic/?hl=%2Bxbox360+%2Bmkv

Mine is not working, I'm curious about a couple things-

1, it says you need the updated "optional Media Update" - Mine is from April 4 2015... 9 days before this topic was posted So I think I have the updated one

2. it suggests install the shark007 codec - somewhere else (I think it was ebr) said you could just use the LAV codecs. Thing is my MKVs play fine on the media center pc via: Media Player, Emby, and Emby for WMC, and in a webbrowserr

My PC is running 8.1 which I thought had native support for MKVs? - I've always had bad luck with codecs so I'm a little cautious to install them...

currently the media center has FFDShow (64bit) and Haali media splitter installed, not sure what installed them but I think I need them... the LAV install readme states that Haali registers "in a bad way" forcing it to be #1

,,, I wished I knew for sure if Haali is needed, if it's not I'd just uninstall it. Likewise I don't know that I need LAV for this...

As always I appreciate any help! Been working on my media collection quite a bit in the past few weeks and would be great to get this working on my xbox - without re-encoding everything.

OK so it looks like Emby for WMC cannot play MKV files despite what the post says.

I followed the steps exactly with the following exceptions:

Step 7. I'm not installing "shark007" codec - Read to many bad things about it, I did install LAV.

Step 9. That option doesn't even exist

And as far as the "Setting up your xbox360":

Well, I don't know what the poster is talking about, I followed the directions to the letter on the "optional media update" - even signing up for xbox gold again. and I get the EXACT same "optional media update" I've always gotten - the one that lets me play .mp4s and AAC audio...

-----

When I try to play an MKV in Emby for WMC it just says "buffering"

MKVs play fine in EMBYand in EMBY for WMC if attempted ON THE PC

This really doesn't have anything to do with Emby.  The 360 doesn't have support for MKVs.  I've seen some people claim they get it to work but most say they can't.  The difference may be exactly what is inside the mkv containers in both cases.

I agree to a point, It doesn't have anything to do with emby. but you  do have a "tutorial and guide topic" one that is in a special area of the forums, the fact that it is located there and commented on by one of the admins (luke no less) makes people think that it should work. it's not merely a post I found *somewhere* on your site.

Yes but realize we have a lot of user-contributed content out here and it can go out of date very easily.  We encourage community members to contribute content like that but it is hard to verify every bit of it.

It's possible that, with an exact following of the instructions (you said you didn't do this) it would work.  It is also possible that the needed software has changed since the article was written and it no longer works - or that it only works with certain kinds of content.

If we can't get someone to confirm that it actually does work, then we should probably remove the article.

Yep, I realize that. And one of the reasons I use and support (including with my money) things like emby is *because* of a good forum / community support. My intent in my second post in this thread is addressed in your final sentence, I feel that if you look at what I *have* done, and what the guide suggests there is enough wrong that it is not a good guide anymore.

Okay, I've put an annotation on it.  If someone doesn't confirm it works in a week or so, we will just remove it.  Thanks.

Worked great for me, please don't remove it. Install Sharks codec, and make sure to enable alternate extender support. Also make sure your 360 account has access to the shares, or it will never direct play. If your files are on a NAS or other share that requires login credentials, be sure to use the login script tool mentioned.
