Fixing TV series with out of order episodes

I apologize for posting this because I have even read another topic or two posted on this board about this topic, but I just can't seem to figure it out.  It's getting frustrating for me because I don't usually have problems with doing these sorts of things...but for whatever reason it's just not clicking.

I have Batman The Animated Series, and it's one of those where the DVD (correct) run order is far different from the run order that downloads from the metadata sites.  I'm trying to correct this and I just can't figure out how to properly do it all.

  • My normal naming convention for TV shows is that I just make the file name the number of the episode, and that's it.  So the 1st episode is just 1.m4v, etc.   With shows like this, can I not do it that way?   Do I need to just name them the actual episode name?
  • I have the .nfo metadata along with the thumb.jpg's in my folder along with all the episodes.  So if I want to change all of these to the correct running order, do I need to edit the .nfo files, the jpg's to be the correct number/name (maybe this part is done for me if I name the files the episode title?) AND go into the metadata manager and change information there? I think that part is helping with the confusion....if I change something in the metadata manager does it automatically update the .nfo's?

Sorry for the long-winded post, but I've just been getting frustrated at my inability to figure this out.  I mean I see that the 1st episode of the 1st season has been downloaded in the metadata as being the 2nd episode of the 1st season, but I just can't seem to get the proper way to rearrange all of these into the proper order.

Best place to star would be to go to the Batman: The Animated Series page on the TVDb - that shows you the sequence of the episodes.

And it is highly recommended to include the season number in the file name - so assuming you're talking about season 1 - then use 1x01.m4v, 1x02.m4v, 1x03.m4v, etc. or S01E01.mv4, S01E02.m4v, etc.

Personally I like to have the series name and the episode name included in the file name, but that's not necessary, although it makes it heapes easier to tell what's what when browsing folders, or "losing" an episode in the wrong folder.

Yes when I pull the metadata that's exactly the information that pulls, from that site.  But the problem is that data is wrong in that it's not the order I want the episdoes to display; I want them to display in the order they are on the DVD as that is the proper order they should be viewed in.

What you want to do is go ahead and order them as TVDB wants (the wrong order) and once the metadata by episode is correct, lock the series. Now you can change the episode order in Emby to reflect the correct order. That is how I did my Firefly.

There is a Feature Request for alternate orders, you may want to try and find it and Like the first post.

So you're saying that after it's done doing it's thing I go into the Metadata Manager and select that "lock" checkbox, and then I go through each episode and change the season/episode number to reflect the correct order on the DVD's.  Is that right?

I *only* need to do this in the metadata manager, I don't need to mess with the .nfo files?

Correct - locking the Series prevents you from accidentally refreshing (and ruining) your changes. The metadata manager updates the xml or nfo files (depending on what you use) so that should be fine.

My Firefly and Almost Human both worked perfectly that way.

Name the files according to the order listed on TVDB so Batman the Animated Series S01E01 The Cat and the Claw (Part1).mkv for example.  It will get the metadata and set the absolute order correctly based on the TVDB data.

Unfortunately the ability to sort by that order is currently broken or not implemented.  Whatever the case, for now you need to lock the metadata and manually set your desired order by modifying the episode numbers.

Yes I think this is the key thing that needs to happen because if I just name them 1.m4v then TVDB pulls The Cat and the Claw metadata and "attaches" it to that 1.m4v file such as the thumbnail and description of the episode, which then pretty much ties the two together regardless.  I can't change the path of which file goes to which metadata, only the other way around.  So I think I pretty much have to name the files after the episode title and then edit the episode number metadata to the proper location.

All fixed now, thank you very much for the help!

So now that I have "locked" this series, will I still be able to properly make these edits when I import the 3rd and 4th volume DVD's?

You can lock stuff at various levels. So you should be able to lock the Seasons instead of the entire Series. Or, you can import the additional seasons and manually refresh those seasons/episodes.

Thank god for your post! I am battling with my Firefly too! What I did notice is that there are a few options on TheTVDB, Absolute Order, Aired order, DVD order etc.

Has been doing my head in as I am a first time viewer, so I only realized halfway through an episode that the episode did not match the plot description AND that I was watching a completely wrong episode!)

Which order did you finally go with, out of curiosity?

The DVD order - which is the one at the top of the page that AdrianW linked to. When I ripped them from my DVDs I named the firefly1.mkv, firefly2.mkv, etc. in the DVD order. Then I manually updated the episode number in the series to the aired order, let Emby do its thing, locked it and finally changed it back.

So yes - I didn't take my own advice (about the naming) because I am anal detail oriented and I wanted to make sure I had the right order in the end.

I completely understand. This whole thing is totally messing with my 'sensibilities'! I just need to accept that the filename wont match.

Thanx so much! Firefly was driving me nuts. Changed the titles and episode description and it's now perfect. Thanx again
