Android TV - Transcoding Problem

I'm testing Emby and am having a problem with playback on my Android TV. The video plays for about 5 seconds and then starts to intermittently pause for a few seconds, play for a few seconds, pause for a few seconds, etc.

Emby server (3.0.5713.1) is installed on my QNAP and the Emby Android TV app (1.0.80g) is installed on my 2015 Sony Bravia TV. The test file is an MP4 file containing H264 video (1080i) and ac3 audio.

When I attempt to play the file, average cpu usage on my QNAP goes for <1% to approximately 80%. The exact same file plays fine using the Android TV version of both Kodi and Plex with average cpu usage on the QNAP of 2 to 3% during playback using these apps.

Attached are the log files for the server and transcoding showing that the Emby Android TV app is transcoding the file for playback.

Any help in figuring out why Emby's Android TV app thinks it needs to transcode the file and how to stop this would be greatly appreciated.

As you suspected, it is stuttering because the server cannot transcode it fast enough (only getting about 20fps).

Have you tried allowing VLC to be used by setting the option in settings to "All"?

Yes, the server can't transcode it fast enough. Actually it could if the Emby transcode engine was able to use the QNAP's native hardware decoder codec but that's a different story. The problem from my end is that, as Kodi and Plex both recognize, the file doesn't need to be transcoded in the first place. It can be streamed directly from the server and plays back perfectly in the Android TV version of both of those apps. So what is in the Android TV implementation of Emby that makes it think that it has to transcode the file prior to playback?

I have tried allowing VLC to be used and that doesn't help. I still get the same stuttering.

Exactly how did you "allow VLC to be used"?  Which options?  Are you sure it wasn't still transcoding (what did the OSD say)?

I have use VLC enabled. Under VLC options I have Max Resolution set to All. With these settings. The screen says Direct/V and no Transcode log file is created. However, the picture keeps freezing and is blotchy between freezes making it totally unwatchable.

If you join the open beta, you can try the beta version with a newer version of VLC which may work better.

I signed up for the open beta and it solved the problem with non-transcoded playback using VLC.
