Is DS415Play/DS415+ powerful enough for Emby

Hi,

I'm running emby from my windows PC today, and I'm pretty happy with it most of the time.

Now I'm considering NAS for centralized storage, and I'd like to ask your experience on performance of Emby on DS415Play or DS415+. I need Emby mainly for videos, and I don't need real-time transcoding (direct play over LAN or Video Station over Internet) in Emby at the moment. Would DS415Play/DS415+ suffice the requirements? Thanks in advance!

Yes both will work fine if you plan to direct play everything.  I would go for the DS415+ between the two.  It's worth the added cost IMO to get a faster processor and the 2nd NIC.  I've used Emby on both, and the slower processor on the DS415play is noticeable at times.

If you don't mind living on the edge in terms of supportability, you may also want to consider XPEnology.  It's a custom boot loader that allows you to run the Synology DSM software on your own hardware.  There are some caveats, but you can build a nicer NAS for the same or less money as the Synology units.  The biggest draw back is the lack of support with the OS itself, since you have no ability to report issues to the people that make the software.  You are also generally a release or two behind, because new releases generally require new bootloaders but not always.

Hi, thank you for the reply!

I have built a PC for home server running windows OS with intel i3 processor, and I'm quite happy with the result except for the power consumption - it consumes >40W even with only 1 harddrive. I consider a NAS if it can replace the server, but otherwise I can throw in another NUC.

I don't see any good reason to XPEnology unless I can find some ITX board with Intel U processors (which only consumes 15W).

My DS415 works good with Emby installed, the dashboard gets unresponsive at times but refreshing it resolves that. My question is transcoding as I find Emby transcodes the content all the time at the server level, so I have some Roku 3's I stream media to when I use DS-VIDEO it just passes the content on and the transcoding is done on the client side being the Roku's. My content is all MKV or MP4 that the Roku can transcode. Also any device that supports DS-VIDEO client (android tablet, cell phone, PC) also work. It would be really nice if their was an option to disable Emby transcoding and pass the stream to the client to transcode as that process bogs down the Synology server processor usless you have an I3 processor. Is there any way to disable Emby transcoding at the server level so it just passes the stream on to the client. Running DS415+.

Thanks
