I have a Sony 2015 Android TV, and I'd like to find out why Emby wants to transcode everything in my library. This is on the latest update (I updated today).

 

Here's a log snippet for a TV episode. It plays in the basic "Video" app, and of course Kodi, but transcodes both video and audio. Could it be the max width? Why would this be 1088??

Oh, and could I suggest a few things?

1. Allow me to set a max bitrate higher than 30. The TV is on a wired connection and has no problem playing 1:1 blu ray rips. I don't want an arbitrary limit to come into it.

2. Make it easier to find out why files are transcoded. Things go wrong when relying on manufacturers to report accurately. Those log files are horrendous, full of random exceptions and headache-inducing to parse. Maybe include a line in the device playback history in the web client "Method: transcoded, Reason: codec ac3 is not supported"

3. For my server (and I suspect many others), if it is transcoding then I consider it a failure. I would therefore want to be able to turn it off and have the client try to direct play everything. If the device really cannot play the file, let it try and then tell me so. Playing a file that the device *might* struggle with (e.g. lots of specs say 4.1 but let's face it, most modern devices could play way more than that) is only a potential error. Watching a spinning cursor whilst the server's CPU thrashes is, for many people, a certain one.

@@bogwoppit - which version do you have installed?

 

Perhaps as an owner if a true Android TV, @@ebr could add you to the beta testing team if you fancy it?

 

The latest beta version does direct stream all 720 media and below, but still transcodes 1080 videos.

I agree 100% with everything you said. I truly don't know why some of the stuff we watch is transcoded. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm having to upgrade the CPU in my server from quad-core to octa-core just to keep on top of this. I really don't like transcoding - I never have. It just seems like a necessary evil these days. I'm even trying to re-encode all my media from MKV to MP4 to try and get round it, as that seems to be a universally accepted container type.

Its a problem with the British English translation.

 

Good thing to know. I've wondered why I couldn't set this higher than 30Mb as well. My Nexus Player is on a USB/wired Gb connection. I'll give it a go.
