FireTV Question

I'm thinking about picking up a FireTV to replace a MediaCenter box in a spare room. I have some questions about what is streamed and what is transcoded on the FireTV. Almost all of my videos are H264 lvl 4.1 with AC3, AAC, FLAC or DTS-HD Audio. Which of those are transcoded? I assume FLAC and DTS-HD off the bat will be but will the video too? Does Emby transcode video and audio if only audio needs to be changed?

Thanks

Are you an Amazon Prime user ?? If not, perhaps think about the Nexus Player instead.

I am a prime member but if the nexus player has better specs, ie no transcoding that is more important to me. This is really just for a spare room where I seem to keep having issues. My daughter and guests seem to keep having "issues" in there and I can't seem to replicate... I think it mostly has to do with leaving things on and things going to sleep causing devices and harmony remotes to get out of "sync"

If you're a Prime user, then the Fire TV is the one to use.

There's not a great deal of difference between the 2 devices in respect of playback, but both will transcode where needed.

You can always install Kodi and then the Emby for Kodi addon which will allow for direct play and no transcoding.

I have Kodi/Emby for Kodi addon and the Emby for Android TV install on both, but I do tend to use Kodi more due to the direct play.

I believe Luke/Eric will eventually get direct play working with the Emby for Android TV app.

Anything over 4.1 will definitely get transcoded, 4.1 should be OK although I think officially only 4.0 is supported.

I think anything not in an mp4 container will get a remux.

Not sure what audio formats are supported but emby will transcode just the audio and direct copy the video to the new container if that is possible. I find that with my Fire TV stick the limiting factor is usually the wifi which can't handle the bitrates required so I have to have the maximum bitrate turned down which makes pretty much everything a transcode.
