Hi, just looking to mess around with the live tv part of EMBY, I have a Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH from my old media center days...  What backend to you guys recommend, that will work with my Ethernet 6 tuner card?   I want it to be maintenance free for the most part, stable, something that just works...  and future proof (to a certain extent).   I would jump right into media center because it is everything BUT future proof..    So any other options?  Maybe some experience examples? Things you went though, backends you DO NOT LIKE as well?

I still use wmc because it works and will be around for many years and I have not used anything that even comes close to it. What I did was install serverwmc which works in kodi and emby so i can watch most of the channels in kodi but I still have WMC as a backup. Kodi cannot view all the channels since I use a cable card.

@@Deihmos I would do that too (and agree its awesome), but WMC will not be around for years...  It doesn't exist in windows 10.   I too have a cable card device.  I don't know how much comcast uses the copy protect stuff....

Hi,

Comcast at least for me just copy-protects (DRM or copy once whatever it is called) the premium stuff as expected. HBO, Showtime etc. Most everything else is ok. WMC by far has the most stable fool proof recording support I have found and Krusty's ServerWMC is good stuff. That being said I have moved on due to Win 10.

Currently I am testing Emby TV  and maybe not an option for you the SiliconDust DVR kickstarter project. The emby Win 8.1/10 client is continually improving its TV support and its MCE IR support. The release today adds guide support. It is a great HTPC client.

WIndows 8.1 is supported until 2022 I think it is and windows 7 until 2020. I have no need to upgrade to windows 10 on my media boxes. All they do is play media and nothing else. My laptop will be upgraded but I don't use wmc on it at all.

It works now and that's all that matters. It has continued to work when WMC hasn't been supported for such a long time.

Well if all you are saying is it works now, then there's little point in bandying about 2022 as if it means something

It means it is guaranteed to work until 2022, I don't know about beyond that but I am not going to bother about 2022 in 2015. By that time something better might come along

Yea I think I may sell my Centon tuner and get an HD homerun so I can use EMBY TV.  The plugin looks easy enough.

And what guarantee do you have on epg?

Exactly my concern, I assume Microsoft is paying a third party for that, and/or someone to maintain it.  If I was someone in Microsoft looking to make a name for myself, i'm sure that would be an easy budget cut.

I find that unlikely I'm afraid.

Unlikely the guide would work up to 2022? Win 7 is supported to 2020 and came with wmc while win 8.1 is to 2023.

Yes, i think you are confusing os support and epg support. To be fair I am surmising, but we will see

I'm sure the guide will get shut down at some point but I also bet you will know about it several months in advance and have plenty of time to react.

I'm trying to understand why the need to switch the the HD Homerun?  Is it the Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH not well supported by Emby TV ?  Or is it all Ceton tuners?  I have a Ceton InfiniTV 4 and I have not made the jump yet since WMC is still working, I will obviously have to plan for the future.

Currently the "emby TV" live TV plugin only works with hdhomerun network tuners, other emby live TV plugins require a backend to be running also, some of these may support your tuner

I'm using WMC with ServerWMC with 2 Ceton InfiniTV4's (one internal one usb) and it works fantastic.  I have a remote user that use's my server for live TV on their Roku, and I use it to view live TV at work or on the go.  I've even taken one of my Chromecast's with me on vacation and was able to use live TV on it to watch my local news while I was out of town came in pretty damn handy.

Everyone bigs up serverwmc but the main reason I dropped it was that I have always had issues with dvblink -> wmc

Still using serverwmc for the mean time until support gets cut for my HDHomerun Prime CC. It's the only one with free and accurate EPG for now and I don't want to pay any more if I don't need to.

From what i have read, yes it only supports the HomeRun tuners...  Oh well looks like Vidman confirms below.

Who developed the Emby TV backend?   I could send you my Ceton 6 ETH tuner for development!  As long as I get it back..

Also, thanks to everyone that has responded so far, it wasn't my intention to start a WMC "debate" lol    But a bunch of good info came out of that..   ^_^

If you look in the catalog it gives the developer info.

Ive also been pondering the end of wmc... im going to move my tuners (usb dvb) to an atom powered "tv head end" (google) server for testing.

if your using serverwmc, epg can be collected with epg collector in most setups ;-)

Epg collector does not work with cablecard and encrypted services. We would need subscriptions to schedules direct which is a paid service which is currently provided free with wmc.

Sorry for that, I must say im surprised no ones either uploading their epg data for others to grab (which may sadly not be legal), although it shouldn't as its free other places (but not in a useable form) its the mad world we now live in.

Or that someone creates a script to aggregate the information from say the cable provider or some online tv listing site (same way the tunerfree mce used to work) so It can then be feed into epg collector, again site providers can get the hump over this. which again is mad as why should it matter if chrome collects the page or wget etc fetches for me to do other things with it...

Again sorry for my miss direction ive only setup with dvbt/dvbs I had no idea dvbc was such a ball ache :-(

Just a heads up, as of 7/7/15 WMC no longer uses Zap2It/Schedules Direct.  They have switched to a provider call Rovi.  If you Google Microsoft EPG Cutover you can find several sites including HDHomerun's that discuss this switch over (and many of the associated issues people are running into as their systems roll through the switch)
