Emby performance on Synology architecture

Just putting this here to help people decide if they want to play with Emby on their NAS and if so what to expect. I have seen a lot of posts about NAS slow or jittery performance. I think this is to be expected unless you run a PC for your backend atm. But it seems the DEV's are on the case.

Current

ARM: transcoding will bog down the unit 100%CPU and then some. if you use Emby for media center, Emby Theater or Android TV then should work

Atom: 1080p 30fps will use 80%+ cpu the unit will become laggy need to use Emby for media center, Emby Theater or Android TV or watch just 1-2 streams

i3 or greater (SOHO/enterprise Synology): will stream till your network bottlenecks

The future

@cytec just for an update regarding transcoding concerns, we are currently working on a custom video player for android that will be capable of client-side decoding. Once complete, our top clients will all be capable of playback without transcoding, and from there it will just be limited to things like the web interface, roku, windows phone, etc. Hopefully that eases the concerns a little bit, and on top of that we do have settings in the management interface to completely disable it if needed.

Well, i was hoping for that second part to be more of a surprise for Emby community members, but I guess that's ok :)

sorry just excited at the awesome. :)

Hi, thanks for the hints!

if I only stream video to KODI and Android TV without transcoding, will it work fine with either ARM or X84 (DS415Play/DS415+)?
