claytonb 2
I originally used the Haali's codec to playback .MKV files on XBOX in WMC, but some MKV files would freeze, so I removed them and installed Sharks 007 and now it's not freezing but throughout the show it would start pixelating, they play ok directly on my computer. Can some recommend a good codec for MKV?
jordy 284
Try LAV filters. All my MKVs play fine using them. You should be able to set up Sharks to use them.
claytonb 2
LAV filters are already set to default in Sharks
jordy 284
If it is the codec causing the pixelation, I would expect that it would happen for the whole movie/video not just parts of it (that's if I understand your post). If it only happens in part of the vid - it could be something else. Look to see if anything is overloading your server during the pixelation. claytonb 2
Yes that's right sometimes not all the time. Nothing is overloading when I play the video, this is what it's looking like
jordy 284
If you look at the background of the shot (picture on wall) it is perfectly defined and not pixelated at all. I think that the face is meant to be shown that way. Do you have any other vids that display the pixelation?
claytonb 2
the background of the picture is my bedroom yeh all MKV files have this problem in this series, I'll try some from another show and report back
jordy 284
haha. I thought the whole thing was a screen grab rather than a photo complete with reflection...
jordy 284
are you watching on the server or another pc/player? if you are not watching on the server then it may be transcoding and the bitrate is way too low, this canm be adjusted in the app you are using eg Android or win 8.1 app etc
claytonb 2
No, I am watching on my XBOX
jordy 284
xbox doesn't play MKV natively. I use Emby Classic on my 360 and never have any pixelation problems playing MKVs which make up about 90% of my vids. edit: So, if they play ok in Classic on your server they should play ok on the xbox. if not then the only thing I can think of is a network throughput issue Edited June 19, 2015 by jordy
claytonb 2
I use Emby Classic also on my 360, I've done a clean install on my computer so I think it's a codec issue
jordy 284
what do you use to play back "directly" on the server? Emby Classic or someting like VLC. If VLC then it uses it's own codecs. so Sharks will not have any effect on that.
jordy 284
I take it that you are using the Classic version for xBox360?
dansblackcat 37
Haali Splitter is just a tool used to open .MKV files. MKV isn't a format, it's just a container that holds video, audio, subs etc. The codec required for playback will depend on what format media is in the MKV. Mpeg, H264 etc... claytonb 2
Yes Jordy using MB Classic on XBOX Should I recode them using VidCoder?
jordy 284
Can you play them without pixelation on the server pc using WMC/Emby Classic? (not using the Emby web Gui or in VLC or any other external program). If they play correctly in Classic on the server they should play ok on the Xbox using WMC/Emby for XBox360. Did you encode them yourself or get them from the internet? I use both here and no problems with either. When encoding my own stuff I use the x264 codec. Do you know what codec is used in your files? As @@dansblackcat said - it's not about the .MKV "container", it's about whats inside it that makes the difference.
claytonb 2
Yes it plays perfectly on the server using WMC/Emby Classic the server monitor is 23" and the TV is 42" could be the fact that it has been enlarged on the TV side? I downloaded it from the Internet. what program to use to check the file codec's?
dansblackcat 37
I use Gspot codec appliance, well I used to. It's really old and maybe there are newer better programs around? Looking for a correct codec is something I rarely do these days.
jordy 284
Mediainfo Is the go. It's what Emby uses to determine the video codec & bitrate etc
jordy 284
If it plays well on the server using classic and you are using Emby classic for xbox on the 360 then I'm out of suggestions. Perhaps someone else can chime in. Are you sure your network is up to it?
claytonb 2
I tried playing another MKV file in the next Season of this show and the same thing happens, then I played another video from a different show and they play ok, so it looks like it's the encoding of those files, I get the info of them and post back soon

hakras 5
I thought I'd chime in my experience as well. I have been using MBC for years and only recently noticed the same pixelation. I've been using Shark007 for years and have only recently encountered this. I have recently been encoding using the WMV. Since those play native (no transcode needed), they DO NOT experience this issue. For me, this is only happening on MKV files. I use XBOX 360s for 100% of my viewing throughout the house. I doubt this is a bandwidth, network issue. I use the native Windows Media Center for live and recorded television. I also use NetFlix daily. There are no issues streaming at all. I only see this pixelation during MVK viewing through Emby. The movies start fine, but over time become pixelated. ebr 14910
I doubt it will make a difference with this but update to the latest release of Emby WMC as it will provide other benefits.
