So is everyone going to Emby Theater once Windows 10 drops?

So annoyed with Microsoft. First they give you this great tool, then they make us pay for it, now they just take it away all together. I was excited about the free upgrade to W10, now I'm just pissed. Emby Theater doesn't work as well as Classic for me. It just doesn't find all of my titles, and Classic works flawlessly. I guess I'm not upgrading. Damnit.

I haven't used Emby Classic for over a year and have never used Emby Theatre and never will.

There are many Emby clients and/or apps that work just as well or better.

I know most transcode, but I don't have an issue with that.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Kodi addon for Emby works well without transcoding.

I use that as well as the Emby ATV app, plus the Samsung Smart TV app.

All works fine.

I am planning to go Emby Theatre with a Win10 upgrade. Am hoping the re-written EMbyT will be released PDQ and then people can start releasing themes for it - you know who I am talking to don't you Dave?

Current Emby Theater isn't even close to being able to be my Live TV solution. Until they get a real guide it just doesn't meet my needs.

Emby as a backend to Kodi though works fantastically. I'm hoping EmbyTV will be able to pick up the slack of WMC so I can have an entirely Emby backend to my Kodi fronts.

I dropped Emby for WMC and moved to Kodi and couldn't be happier. My HTPCs will remain on Windows 8 for live tv support in wmc.

I, personally, see no reason to upgrade HTPC from Win 7 to Win 10. It does one thing, and one thing only, and that is WMC with Emby for WMC. Win 7 is supported through 2020 and it won't suddenly stop working once Win 10 releases. As long as Emby for WMC keeps going I'll be happy.

Got Kodi running on my personal desktop but am not comfortable with putting it on my HTPC. I find, and this is my opinion only, the configuration for KODI to darn complicated as compared to Emby for WMC.

Keeping 8.1 with Media Centre until it will no longer do the job I need it to.

Emby Theatre is way too raw for me yet, I'm sure it will get to where it needs to be, and when it does I'll make the switch.

Remember.... you don't HAVE to upgrade  :)

Have you tried the Kodi for Emby addon ?

I don't like Kodi, but as an client to Emby, it works well. I wouldn't replace Emby Classic with it, but I use it on my Nexus Player and Amazon Fire TV.

For me it depends on if Theater has been completed by then and what it can offer at that time. At the moment I have moved from using it regularly to using emby for kodi as I got fed up having to change settings for no reason every time an update has come out recently in order to get video/audio sync as it should be. This never used to be an issue but has been this way for a good while and I just got tired of it.

Yeah, that is what I running on my desktop.  Just the Kodi skins I have issues with.  A lot of tweaking to get it to look just right.

I recently stopped running Emby Theater... It is now officially unusable. It crashes soon after launch. Not even a complete uninstall fixes it. Its a pity, Emby Theater (in my opinion) should be the Flag Ship client that all clients should model after. NOT the web client.

That I totally agree, and in matters of fact, when this project start, that was the main client for the server.

I think we need to take away all Luke mobile devices :)

But that not to put down the current dev's of MBT, give them time and they will bring the great MBT back.

I think team may find a way around the Kodi. Kodi by far the best player in town in the sense of supported formats, performance and new features. I'm not saying that lets build a heavily reduced and customised version of Kodi like Plex did and failed badly. If you take that path it is really hard to support and catch up the new releases from Kodi team. Plex have stuck on Frodo and still trying to catch up. 1 month passed since the last coming soon for proper support of HEVC, Atmos etc. (Kodi now support 4K and HEVC on Android :))

I believe that team can/may find a way to built easy to setup lightly customised/forked Kodi version for EMBY backend. This way you don't need to maintain and support multiple players across multiple platforms. I know it's not that easy as it sounds but just my 2 cents.

Abo, thanks for that. Glad you are still around after all this time. Remember back when Emby Theater was THE client?? All the new features being added as fast as WE could think of them. How it molded so quickly?? I miss those days.

Hi,

Personally I think the Win 8 client is the way to go. It plays just about everything natively now and with Win 10 that list will increase.. Full feature support for Movies, Tv and Music. Live TV still needs a guide, but sure that is in the works.

Current release under development is continuing to refine support for an MCE remote control. So that should be covered.

The new scaling options in Win 10 work really well and make an already great looking UI even better.

What win 8 client are you referring to? The win 8 metro app? It never worked well for me plus no remote support.

Kodi is the way the way to go if you ask me. It works perfect and is not limited to Windows. I don't think everyone realize the multitude of great plugins that exist for kodi like iptv stalker.

Hi,

Yes the Metro App, Works great. Have you tried it recently ? Remote support is in there. Being tweaked and refined as we speak.

Like I said It plays just about everything directly.

I can't use it over kodi. I doubt it can send a 5.1 signal to a receiver and I honestly never liked it. I'll try it out to see what changed.

Hi,

To each his own :) But check it out. It has really been refined. 5.1 output currently AC3 and PCM works just fine. Remote support is in the current release. Just make sure you select Mouse and key board under input method. Like I mentioned it is being tweaked in the development version.

If you are running Win 10, mkv, hevc, flac, alac. goodness are all available in the current release as well.

So bottom line is no, I will not be using Emby Theater when W10 comes out. It WAY to far behind in features.

Actually not sure what I will be running... Emby for MC is out with W10. The only client for a 10' experience is the 8.1 app. Haven't tried using it in some time. Maybe its up to par on what I need. Direct stream (no transcoding), HD audio support. These are a must have in my living room and theater.

I do not see the issue that much.. I will update my server to win 10,  but I will keep on win 7/8. That will take me to in the 2022's or so..

My media pc's run in media center all the time and it does not care what version of windows it runs on. When the time comes to completely drop media center(for me this is driven by TV support) I will reevaluate if I stay with Emby. Emby server is probably the best there is, but theater is way behind plex.

Also for me the new silicondust hdhomerun dvr app will have a lot to do when I drop media center.. it will be the first media app to support cable cards, so I will look to integrate with it..

Win7 or win8.1 and emby media centre for me. I use both on intel nuc(8.1) and gaming HTPC rig(7). Both work flawlessly for me and emby wmc still has the most feature rich platform.
