Android TV Live TV

We have recently gotten a very great Live-TV Guide from ebr for Android TV/FTV. Thx ebr!  :)

Yesterday with Android M-release Google released Live TV channels app for Nexus Player and other Android TV devices. It's possible to combine internal tuners of TV + external tuners + IPTV in the same app.

Google has released a TV Input Framework for Live TV and DVR.  https://source.android.com/devices/tv/

Silicondust tuners seem to work with this new way in Android TV.

Also Google is allowing some web applications to get their live video feed in the EPG acting like a real TV-channel.

It would be great to have TV-channels from Emby's backends and Emby providing the implementation to work with this new Android TV feature.

We could then have channels various sources in one unified app, Emby included!

Video feed channels, like Netflix + Emby TV-channels + internal tuner based channels, all on the same app would be a killer.  ;)

Is there an instructional video on how to install the live tv on media browser?  Also any additional hardware or software to be installed?

yup we should definitely make sure to get in there.

Great to hear! The TV input framework is linked in my first post.  :)

If you need someone to test the Live TV Integration, let me know! I would love to help.

I have 2 HDHR's, one new one and one old one that doesn't feature built in transcoding, and I am using Emby TV.

Does the Live TV channels app from google work also with protected channels (HBO etc...)?

Just thought before taking the plunge and buying a Nexus Player I would check if the current Emby Android TV client uses the TV Input Framework for Live TV as per first post in this thread?

Another +1 for this idea.  This is the only thing holding me back from committing to any DVR solution.  To date, there isn't a single one that integrates DVR into the "Live Channels" app.

One question I have here is if the SD tuner is already directly integrated wouldn't we be duplicating all of those channels?

I currently have the HDHomerun app installed to directly integrate into the live channels app. but I would really prefer to use Emby as the source. 1). It would clean up my home screen. 2). I have found Emby to be more reliable, and 3). I prefer using Emby since it has DVR integration built in. Also, if you guys happen to have any plans to support pre-DLNA HDHR models, or if someone were to use any of the TV plugins, the integration of that into the Live Chanels app would be great.

Ultimately, it would be great to consolidate, the 3 apps that I have managing my HDHR box into a single app (Emby).

Thanks for all of your great work. I love Emby. :)

In light of Android M and Live TV, I went ahead and recently purchased a Nexus Player.  As soon as I got it I loaded Android 6 "M" on to it and purchased the HDHR View App.  I installed the Emby Android TV client and can't be more giddy with what I am getting.

I love emby for everything it does, But what had turned me off on the live TV was , and no fault of emby or it's clients, that itneeds to transcode every channel.  so viewing live tv and changing channels is for someone who has lots of patience.  unbearable at times.

The live TV app built into the Andriod TV does just that with my SiliconDust HDHR-Prime device.  I get a full tv guide for free and it sends the mpeg2 feed directly from the HDHR-prime to the nexus player.  Switching channels is pretty instantaneous and the guide loads up all the listings.  I can easily scroll up and down at great speeds.  No need to reload or have screen refreshes.

If there is a way to incorporate that into the Emby Android TV client, interface directly with the live channels app.  that would be the ultimate.  it would be my one stop shop for everything media. Add DVR functionality to that, and thats the icing on the cake.

Pretty much what ryantiger6588 stated of combining the apps into one would be awesome.

It isn't going to go that direction.  What we would be doing with this is exposing our channels to the "Live Channels" app, not the other way around.  So you'd get the same channels you're seeing now directly from the HDHR.  What we could potentially add (if the interface allows it) is the DVR side.  But then we'd have to figure out how to deal with the duplication of the channels.

However, if that app can direct stream your channels, then there should be a way for us to figure that out too.

Also please start a new thread as this one doesn't appear to have anything to do with your issue.  Thanks.

Resurrecting this older thread to see if any more thought has been given to exposing TV channels to Android Live Channels app AND integrating DVR. Silicondust mentioned this is planned for their DVR with protected content support but lately I have been thinking of getting rid of cable and going OTA. With Emby providing superior EPG and remote scheduling capabilities, I would prefer to use Emby once protected content is out of the picture.

What about instead of passing the live channels to the live tv app, emby passes channels created based from your library? Sorta like the Pseudo Tv live plugin in kodi, is that possible?  Thanks.

You'd have two different sets of channel maps if Emby tried to Frankenstein its TV server and SD's backend together. The Live Channel app expects one streaming source to pass everything to it, channel, guide data, and stream.

However I believe as of 5781.5 Emby Server supports Direct Play for live TV on supported clients...I don't know if the Android TV client is one of those yet and even if it is your device (Shield, whatever) will need to be able to handle the decoding, of course. So potentially you wouldn't need to do that, as in theory if Emby is direct streaming it will work just as well as if Live Channels were using the HDHR directly.

For all this integration to work Emby would also need to receive commands back from Live Channels. That may be possible but would involve more than just modifying the Android TV client.

It'd be nice to see for sure for a couple reasons - one, the Live Channels app, even in the basic state it is now, is a damn nice guide framework, and two, it's a separate app, so you don't have to train family members to dig around in the actual Emby app. You could also use Kodi for Emby for your local media and have it launch the Live Channels app directly which in some ways is better than even the Kodi PVR interface (which would also take a lot more work on the part of Emby to support). I do this now with Live Channels configured to talk directly to the HDHR interface. If it were all integrated with Emby instead - meaning, across multiple clients, DVR, etc. - that would be excellent but I suspect there is more work than it appears to be done.
