Forced pgs subtitles not playing in several apps?

Hi, I'm running Version 3.0.5621.4 of the server but have had problems for many months now. I'm noticing this with pgs subtitles that are embedded in a file, and it happens with mkvs and m2ts formats alike. I have set the web interface's user preferences to play only forced subtitles, and that plays fine. However, whether I play the same file in Emby Theater, the Roku app, or the Windows 8.1 app, I can't get them to play. Since it affects all those apps, I'm assuming it's a server issue but I can't find a setting anywhere to get them to play automatically.

Any recommendations?

well if you see here, i tested pgs just yesterday in almost every app except for theater, with no problems found. i'll have to test theater on that though.

Huh, interesting. My issue seems consistent with every video I play with pgs subtitles. And to be clear, the video itself plays fine, it's just that the subtitles don't appear automatically. In Emby Theater, I have tried setting the subtitle settings to show only forced (I've confirmed by examining the file that the subs are marked as forced), but in order to get them to play I have to manually choose them in the Subtitles menu once the video starts playing. Similar with the Roku app, they don't show automatically for me, I have to manually choose the subs before playing the file. And in the Windows 8.1 app, I can't find any setting that will get them to show at all. But again, the web player plays them just fine. It's weird.

Two thoughts:

1. Would using the Open Subtitles support improve this?

2. It seems like subtitle handling is done by each individual app. I was thinking, at least in my case, that it would be much easier to have the server determine how all a user's apps should handle subtitles.

Text based subtitles are always simpler and more efficient but your current ones should work as well. The apps and the server work together to deliver the subtitles in the best possible way.

Ok, thanks Luke. I'll keep experimenting to see if there is something I'm overlooking with my setup. Hopefully it'll be resolved soon.

Ok, not sure what's happened but now even the web player on two different devices doesn't auto play the subtitles. In the upper right selection menu it definitely shows subtitles as off, although I can pick them and they then transcode fine.

I did. It's set to forced only as before, and I checked the web player and it does register the subtitle track as forced, but I still have to pick it manually. It also registers the language as English, but either setting the preferred language in user preferences to English or just leaving it blank results in the same outcome.
