Link Movies to TV Series

I remember a while back hearing mention of a possibility of eventually implementing a feature that would link movies to TV series.

I would like to officially request this feature.

That way we could have movies in the Movies collection, but have them linked to TV shows.  This would be useful for items like The X Files, Doctor Who, Twilight Zone, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Dead Zone, and many others.

Thanks for listening!

It's coming soon. I would like to be able to show this relationship in mbt.

Awesome.  Thanks, Luke!

Seeing as the metadata comes from separate sites it seems that this would be a really expensive feature in terms of server resources and perhaps network bandwidth.

Actually it would just be a manual process. So I have to build some functions into the web client to assign the relationships. But the biggest thing is getting clients to use the information. We haven't really been adding a ton of new api features lately and that's given the ui developers time to catch up. So I'd like to see that continue first.

Yeah I would assume you just would go in and manually add a series ID or movie ID or something to one or the other. For instance on a movie, you could edit it and just add in a TV Series id and then it would know they are linked. I would think it would have to be on the movie side, wouldn't work the other way around.

One place it could be used is the "similar" area. It could bring up any links as the top results.

This would be a nice quality of life improvement. XBMC allows you to do this. Then when viewing television series, the movie is listed similar to a season.

Exactly.  It could be done the same way Soundtracks can be linked to movies or TV shows.

One solution could be the introduction the "TV collection". Like boxsets with support the shortcuts. Members of the collection, along series, could be movies. Metadata could filled manually until TMDb will be enaugh.

We don't want to force you to have a physical structure for this relationship.  As mb said, it will most likely work just like soundtracks now.

Well I ran into this dilemma today... mine is a little bit different. I have these "movies" inside the tv series special/season 0 folders, but would love to still have a movie entry for users that go looking for it in there. I attempted placing a movie folder and linking a shortcut to the video file but that doesn't appear to be supported. Not sure what the correct way to go about this is, as of now I'll stick with what I have been doing.

You use to be able to link a soundtrack to a movie before also which I liked.  Now the only way I see around it is making a collection which isn't quite the same

Yeah last time I asked about this I was told it was coming back soon. Many months have passed since then and no sign of it.

I would also really like this. One problem i've noticed with XBMC Kodi is that you lose the correct sort order. Kodi can associate them but can not scan TheTVDB.com to get the correct sort data. My idea to fix this wold be for EMBY to be able to pick up short cuts and files. I have no idea if this possible but it would be cool if you do something like this

\Movies\Serenity (2005)\Serenity (2005).mkv (actual file)

\TV\Firefly\Season 0\Firefly - 00x01 - Serenity (2005)\Firefly - 00x01 - Serenity (2005).mkv (shortcut to above)

Some sort of way to handle this would be good, was wondering if the server/ or a new premiere plugin could generate a virtual item in movies if say the tv episode metadata allowed for a tmdbid link to the movie equivalent. I also see the imdb link exists in those special episodes that are movies, which obviously links to a movie entry on there but I know fetching can't come from there.

So for example on this tvdbid

http://thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=78874&seasonid=26328&id=415679

If a plugin or the server could fill in a tmdbid on that item or even manual entry by user could a virtual item type entry be created in movies for this?

No news but you could create a collection containing both a movie and a series.
