MP3 audio format not supported on Roku?

Testing out Emby and I added a few MP3s to the "Emby Music" folder and Emby Theater can play them, the web front end can play them but when I try to listen to my MP3s from Roku via the Emby channel..... I get this odd error like, "format not supported". I forget the exact error but can add it later if need be.

Any ideas?

Attaching log file.

I created a folder, "d:\emby mp3" and dumped 3 MP3 files in it. When I turn on the Roku and launch the Emby channel and click on "Music", I get the following error:

Unsupported Format

None of the audio tracks in this list are in a supported format.

Use MP3 for best results

OK

If you need anything else, let me know. Thanks!

I just notice this, I have my music in folder view and if you hit play (on remote) on Artist or Album I get the same message, but if I navigate into album all tracks play.  Happens in both 1.96 and 2.04.

No change in enriched view either.

Just wondering if you were able to resolve this issue and if so, what was your solution?  I'm having this same problem on all of my Rokus - 4 Roku SE's and a Roku 3.  If I select an Album from my Music folder and press Play, I receive the exact error mentioned:

Unsupported Format None of the audio tracks in this list are in a supported format. Use MP3 for best results

On the Roku 3, if I open the album, I can select and play the tracks individually, but on the Roku SE's, I cannot open the Album at all.  I get no error or warning, the album just won't open so I cannot select the tracks.  I also can't exit the app back to the Home screen on the SE's; after I try to open the album once, I am stuck within the app.

The Roku 3 is on the latest firmware OS 7 9044.  I'll have to check the SE's, but since they were purchased during Black Friday (end of November) I'd assume they're at least v7 9021.  I'll try to have a look tomorrow and get back.

Any ideas?  Further details needed?

Thanks for the response.  I've checked all the Roku devices and they are on v9044.  The RokuSE's are responding better now; the app is not freezing when I try opening a playlist, album or artist.  I am able to open the playlist, album, or artist and view the files, and I can play them, but if I try to push play with the Roku Remote directly from the playlist, album or artist icon, I am still receiving the error:

Unsupported Format None of the audio tracks in this list are in a supported format. Use MP3 for best results

I know why this happens.

Homescreen.brs:

else if id = "playlists" or id = "boxsets"

url = url + "/Users/" + HttpEncode(getGlobalVar("user").Id) + "/Items?sortby=sortname"

This is all it is doing when retrieve that row of the homescreen. This wont let you press play since it cant find any media sources to play (audio and photos need mediasources)

else if id = "playlists" or id = "boxsets"

url = url + "/Users/" + HttpEncode(getGlobalVar("user").Id) + "/Items?sortby=sortname"

query = {

fields: "PrimaryImageAspectRatio,MediaSources"

}

Now it should let you press play from the homescreen's playlist row directly. When the MusicScreen is pulled (via press OK) it does pull the MediaSources, but you are trying to press play directly from the homescreen.

@@Luke Actually this doesnt work, because of how the array is passed. Neverminds. Will dig deeper here.

if you don't mind submitting one that would still be great though, just because i might forget about it otherwise. thanks.

It doesnt work @@Luke. Its the fact play is clicked from within a row (continuous play mode). This will have to be handled like video is, but instead of play the entire row which is what its trying to do at the moment, you pull each item check if it is audio and pass that single item in the queue to the music screen as a middle man. Its passing the entire row to the music screen. The array it passes is 3 levels deep. The top level is the full row. Music screen only likes 2 levels deep. It cant see the mediasources buried at the 3rd level. With the middleman approach it can, and then it will recursively work and pass queues when pressing play from within rows. So it would work the same way videos do and continuously play. This would require work on the audio player as it likes to loop to the beginning at the end, rather than move to the next queue item. This is more involved than I suspected at first. But I understand how the workflow would work to make it. I will hack around and try to make this possible.

I'm getting the same. I am playing an .mp3 file from a library marked as "mixed content".  If I hit the "OK" button on the remote I get this:56c6b0f6d63a1_music04.jpg

If I hit the play/pause button, I get this:

56c6b11e8fc52_music05.jpg

This doesn't happen if I am in a library set as music, movies, tv, etc.

I am on Server Version 3.0.5878.0 and Emby Roku App Version 2.2 build 4 (Roku 3).

This is a symptom of using mixed content for music. Mixed content suggest video, not music.

Are these mp3 directly in root path not part of an album? It looks like that is the case. If so, this is why as well. You cannot play individual mp3 they need to be in an album folder and this loads the track list.

It is possible to load that type of mp3 list the way you have it. This is how the Blue Neon Night app on roku loads the favorite songs list. But this would require more users having the problem since that way of using music by folder view is discouraged.

So where do my .mp3 podcasts and .mp3 audiobooks go. I have the luxury (sarcastic) of a huge audio directory that is a cluster*** when classifying it as just music and the only way it works (especially for the wifey) is folder navigation marked as "mixed content".

From the Wiki, I see this, "Use the unset content type if you'd like to add a media folder that mixes different content"

Content defined prior as "Movie, TV and Music sections"

I also notice this: "Please note that support for mixed content is limited"

I get that support may be limited, but as I understand this was in reference to the server. This error also doesn't exist in any of these apps: MBT, ET, iOS, WebApp.

Add the /music folder as type music the single folder.

/music/podcasts/

/music/audiobooks/

/music/albums/

/music/misc/

Inside the podcasts and audiobooks folders can now hold mp3's. They will be called the album "podcasts" and "audiobooks" which is what you want. Inside misc place random mp3's. You get the idea. Mase sure you do not group the music section in your user preferences. Make sure you do enable enhanced presentation for music. This should make a folder for music appear in the folder row, and enhanced presentation in the music row. You'll get both.

I wish I could follow you here ... are you saying to make a "library" for all the different audio folders/directories I have? If so that would be a crazy list in the home menu:

Movies

TV

Photo

Video

Audio Folder 1

Audio Folder 2

Audio Folder 3 ............ Obscene amount here

The other way you may have meant this was to add a "Music" library and then add all the different audio folders/directories as "folders/sources/paths" in the server library settings (add a folder button). That pretty much does the same as just adding the parent directory and I get a giant checkerboard of artists, tracks, albums, sample banks, folders, compilations, etc., etc.

If I ONLY had .mp3's that may work somewhat but its equal parts compressed and lossless files ... and no I'm not going to convert a quadrillion samples and tracks to Flac from .wav's

In other words, if anyone has an already organized directory system of audio files, how did you get this to work/navigate or is this something that just isn't there yet?

I have used XBMC/Kodi for years and a standard folder navigation works perfectly there??

Although I am aware of the limitations of "mixed content" libraries on roku, and the workaround, I just wanted to note that I am running into this as well.  I have a Christian Media library that I recently switched from videos to mixed content due to the fact that one of the programs (video reflections) that runs weekly had an audio reflection (song) one week.  I want the users to still be able to access this program, and follow along it chronologically, though currently they will simply have to do so via the web or android access.

Actually...

The official roku app cannot understand audio/songs as playable items when displayed in rows. They must be inside of an album, artist, genre or playlist to be supported. You cannot search for audio/songs either.

The blue neon roku app understands how to play audio/songs when encountered in rows. It also will let you use search and find them. There are many audio/song improvements in the app.

Find it here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/24151-theme-blue-neon-night/

I actually added a mixed library type and went to test this. Appears I was wrong, the blue neon app wasnt correctly interpreting them. I added support for mixed libraries into the blue neon app now. It required a new music player screen that strips items not audio from context. I also made the audio playable from the video springboard screen. Preliminary tests show success too. Will have a new version of the emby blue neon roku app shortly.
