What remote do you use with Theatre?

@, that is good, but how does it handle functions like fast forward, rewind etc? I am assuming that you have to use the cursor to drag the progress or make calculated clicks on the progress bar to find where you want to end up.

It has multimedia keys (top right) that I use without issue. It's nice to be able to use the mouse to skip large chunks as well.

I used to use one of those. One big problem they have is the bearings for the trackball are plastic, and they wear down pretty quickly. I switched to using this https://www.amazon.com/Adesso-Wireless-Keyboard-Trackball-WKB-3000U/dp/B006H4Y70W/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1469148520&sr=1-10&keywords=adesso+keyboard It has steel bearings. It would appear they don't make them, anymore, so if you want a multimedia keyboard, this one is also an option

I've probably spent $300 on random trackball keyboards trying to find one I like, the one I linked I've gone through 5 of in the last 4-5 years. I found out that for the trackball issue you can just unscrew the casing, take it out and sand it just a tiny bit and it's like new after that. The problem is it's plastic and it wears down to perfect smoothness which makes the detection wonky.

Will take a look at the one's you linked.

But well do these trackball keyboards handle the other functions like fast forward and rewind etc? What about things like the * that when pressed will bring up options?

They are multimedia keyboards, that have play, pause etc. They have 'skip' buttons that I'm sure could be remapped.

I actually replaced them with steel bearings, but the Adesso trackball is far better. It's bigger and has a much smoother action. (I didn't intend that to sound pornographic  :) )

Didn't even consider that. You have a good one you can link me to order? Steel bearing sounds amazing :)

They just click out. Take one to the hardware store and match the size. But another problem it has, is they don't move. The trackball just slides on them. The Adesso bearings move, so the trackball rolls, not slides.

Here's their website, so you can look at their products.

It isn't in production, anymore, but you can still buy it....at a price! Amazon has it.

I've since switched to separate keyboard and trackball, which I find much better. (I use the trackball considerably more than the keyboard)

You can also look at these guys. They make good stuff. I have one of their keyboards.

The one thing I don't recall seeing in any of these responses, is the initial launch of Emby Theatre. I remember in old MB, the green button would launch it. Does the green button do the same for theatre?

There are a number of posts that offer some techniques to create a remote button to launch Theater.  To tie to the Green button, would require some sort of program that could hijack it though.  That button was a specialized launch for WMC.  It never launched MB, but, rather just Media Center.

Well for me it does not have to be the green button. I was wondering how everyone is doing their initial launch. For now I am just going to tie the executable to the startup menu so that when the machine boots up, it will launch automatically.

I may have a different usage scenario than you but here is how I do it:

I am using a Flirc device which emulates keyboard presses that I then use a remote control (almost any remote will work but I use a Harmony 650) to control apps and such. To launch Emby Theater on the HTPC I create a hot key in the application shortcut. Basically I right click the app shortcut and assign cltr-alt-Q in the shortcut key space. Then I assign that key in the Flirc program to a specific key on the remote. Now when I hit that key on the remote Emby Theater launches.

you can easily remap the green button directly via registry or using MceRemoteMapper to change the registry settings. change green button for win + 1 and place emby shortcut as first pinned item on taskbar and you done

I just have WINKEY+4 mapped to one of my remote buttons. Emby Theatre is the 4th icon from the left on my taskbar.

Excellent. I have been very happy with my setup thus far. I actually bought a second Flirc about 2 months ago to use with my Fire TV since it doesn't have an IR input. I don't use the Fire TV any longer since I now have 2 Nvidia Shield devices and they both have IR inputs that work well with the Harmony 650 (there is a profile for the Shield on the Harmony software).

I'm currently using Mele F10, have ordered Rii mini i25A, also have my TV remote with HDMI CEC adapter. (And a Xbox One controller and Harmony One I don't use.)

I want RF for PC control. Once you've had RF it's hard to go back to IR!

None of these remotes have fast forward / rewind buttons only skip forward back. I had a quick look at EventGhost and couldn't remap the skip forward and back buttons. They show up as HID device. Anyway seems like quite a pain to remap - but I'm open to suggestions.

Mele F10 fairly nice. Can learn IR commands from multiple remotes. Though for some reason doesn't work with my Panasonic TV and Pioneer receiver. Does work on two other TV's I've tested (LG and Samsung). Rechargeable battery lasts ages (quite a few months). Button layout could be better (i.e. like decent Harmony remote). Being able to use a mouse quickly and easy also very useful. I don't use the keyboard at the back often but it's faster than using onscreen keyboards. Using the remote my wireless keyboard manages to stay in the draw for months.

Rii mini i25A - I bought this cause it looks a little nicer than the Mele F10 design wise. I'm hoping the IR works with my Panasonic TV. Also has a better keyboard layout than the Mele F10.

CEC adapter not bad, but I can't use the transport buttons (play, pause, fast forward etc) on my Panasonic TV remote - supposed to be able to activate them, but the codes in the manual just don't work. Can use the directional pad, enter, back and a few other keys. My Panasonic remote is IR so that's my biggest annoyance.

CEC quite nice being able to turn off TV and AVR via HTPC. Also volume control can be passed to TV (or AVR if it's on). Another big annoyance - would like to know if it's just my remote, but holding down button presses are slow. e.g. holding down left to scroll movies sends about 2 presses a second. Much slower than above remotes or a keyboard.

Currently have the adapter unplugged after having sound cutting out randomly. Trying to work out if it's the adapter, bad connection or failing HDMI cables.
I presume a Firc would pickup my transport buttons. But lose other advantages as above.

Why does nobody make a decent remote? RF to TV. Gyroscopic mouse. Better button layout that you can feel what button is what. I don't use the keyboard often but it is useful, I'd probably ideally like a cover that slides off or swings open to use it. Back-lit keys a bonus. IR learning that works and ability to use with TV and or AVR.

Maybe the CEC comes in handy when I upgrade the TV and it comes with a decent RF remote...

I'm using a Lenovo-branded elcheapo MCE remote.  That communicates with the IR on my NUC.

The bedroom setup has the MCE remote off a long-departed Logitech MCE extender box.  Also communicating with a NUC via the built-in IR.

I should ad that I'm using Windows - Advanced MCE Remote Mapper Tool with my rc6 ( mce remote ).

I use the green button to fire up Emby if needed.
