MKV wont direct play

MEB

Recommended Posts

Every MKV I play lately has been transcoded instead of direct play. MP4 direct plays just fine. Channel is set to 30Mbps, on a wired network.  I have them all shared correctly because both the mp4 and mkv are in the same main shared folder. I have the roku 3 so it is capable of directly playing them. I have tried the non beta channel and the beta channel and get the same results. I added the log for both a tv show and a movie that was being transcoded.

I need it to direct play because I get errors with transcoded stuff where at the end of the show the video will jump back a few minutes and start playing from that point.

I have tried the non beta channel and the beta channel and get the same results.

try the beta channel

I did, beta is 1.98 correct? That is the version I use.

I'm no expert and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but both of your examples show mkv files with ac3 audio. Roku only supports aac audio which is why they transcode. I use XMedia Recode on all of my mkv and mp4 files that have ac3 audio. You can copy the video without changing it and convert the audio to aac and keep the ac3 for passthrough for receivers that can play ac3.

CBers

My MKV videos with AC3 transcode to AAC so that the Roku plays them. Video is direct play.

I also get the jump back issue which has been around for several server releases without resolution.

I know it's going to happen, so I just back out and watch the next video I want.

It's a pain, but I can live with it for the time being/until it's fixed.

How can you tell the video is direct play? I hit OK when playing back and it just says "Transcode AAC" If its transcoding the audio wont it actually be doing the audio and video? I just hate hitting my server with ffmpeg all the time when I have game servers running it hurts their performance. I guess it might be time to drop using the roku and build a htpc.

Look at the transcode log on the server.  An audio only transcode takes very little resources.

So, looking at the logs i posted it looks like its doing both. So any other ideas how to get my Roku 3 to only transcode the audio?

Check the transcode log.

It should say something like:

Stream mapping:

Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (copy)

Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (ac3 (native) -> aac (native))

There's another thread about these issues here: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/19362-loading-please-wait-at-the-end-of-playback/

Yep, I had it actually direct play after fiddling with the settings, here is the log...

The change I think fixed it was turning off the throttling setting, now it says (copy), ffmpeg still hits my cpu for 40% though, but it is a improvement.

nothing to do with that. and whenever you see codec:copy the the throttling is not used anyway.

But i didn't see codec:copy until i disabled throttling, that was the only thing I changed since my first logs in the OP. idk why but it just works now..  Ill stop touching settings, for now.

Here is the same video as OP log.

That seems to have done the trick! Thanks for the update!

Is that the latest ZIP?

I just forced a update of the beta channel, went in system settings on the roku and did update.

I can't do that with the Now TV box as Emby is side-loaded.

Yes that is the latest zip as of yesterday.

I also noticed it transcodes files on the release version of EMBY. I use the beta version and it direct plays the ones that were transcoded on the release version.

Is the version number stored in one of the files somewhere?

I'm on 2.03 as of right now, not sure if it's in one of the files.  I usually just load it up and scroll down to "preferences" and it says the version number there.

However, now I find myself in a strange situation.

I've downloaded a fullHD movie. It's an mkv with dts audio (h264 and dca, if I'm not mistaken).

And I can't convince Emby to not transcode it but send directly.

Even in the transcode log it seems that directplay is allowed:

http://pastebin.com/1473RfW4

For directplay in my profile there is:

Container: mkv

Video Codec: h264

Audio Codec: aac,ac3,mp3,dca,dts

For Codecs removed everything to not have any conditions.

Max streaming bitrate is set to 30Mbps.

This mkv needs about 12-15Mbps.

I also did another test: I copied the movie onto an USB stick to check if the TV is able to play this at all.

It was able to do that smoothly.

What do you think, why Emby wants to transcode my mkv?

Thank you,

Best Regards

Is this a Roku issue also since the exact same thing is posted in DLNA LG Webos?
