NVIDIA Shield Android TV

I would assume the Android TV Emby app would work here correct?

I like that they clearly state their audio and video features:

Video Features 4K Ultra-HD Ready with 4K playback and capture up to 60 fps (VP9, H265, H264) Audio Features 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound pass through over HDMI
High-resolution audio playback up to 24-bit/192kHz over HDMI and USB
High-resolution audio upsample to 24-bit/192hHz over USB

What I am not sure if they just pass though PCM or other formats like DTS and such?

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Thanks,

yes, that is part of the HDMI standard,  my PC passes DTS through my HDMI cable to my TV, the TV then passes that off to an optical cable down to my A/V receiver, where it plays the DTS track.

both analog PCM and digital DD/DTS audio signals are transmitted through HDMI, simultaneously if available

The Specs say it will but the determingin factor will be if Android TV will let it.  YUou may also get a forked android version from Nvidia with a internal player.

No one knows yet. I am very interested. I hope they also sell it without the controller for a cheaper price point.

Specs say passthrough of 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound over HDMI. While not specific, they also state High-resolution audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI

Which would indicate that even if actual hd-audio passthrough is stonewalled by the android platform, then at least the 24/192 HDMI capability means the console has potential to pass lossless audio already decoded (with some developer help of course)

Shield Console is making it's way to my living room no matter whether passthrough ends up being bitstream or decoded http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/1924418-official-nvidia-shield-console-htpc-discussion.html

I will be picking this up for sure. It will have all the horsepower for everything and also will handle H265.

This will be a great little machine.

Sounds good. I personally won't get my hopes up on devices that boast 4k capability until hdmi 2.0 is out, and then a bit after that for issues to be identified with it. It's all just too young right now to invest in.

Count me in as well.  On paper, this thing is damn near the perfect HTPC (for my purposes, at least).  The ability to have Kodi/Emby, Netflix, Live Tv (through 3rd party apps such as HDHomerun View or Tablo, or running it through Kodi), GoogleCast, and HD Audio (fingers crossed).....all under one hood....that is awesome!  Not to mention that this thing will work out of the box with a Logitech Harmony.  I'm really hoping this device pans out how it reads on paper.

If we want to win though, our guide has to be the best and the prettiest. And it will be.

I'm working on improving the live tv experience in the app.  I have some good improvements during live tv playback in beta now but haven't tackled the guide just yet.

For me it might take a little more then that that to ditch Kodi with Emby. In some scenarios I may switch to the native Emby app, because with this device it's likely they release a custom player with custom codec support. That could mean little or no transcoding, and I won't at all sweat audio transcoding for occasional flac playback if most all videos are supported Edited by dark_slayer

I may replace the roku in my room with this device.   Then push the roku somewhere else.

Thanks for the info.

Kodi is open source right?  Could we not just see if some of the developers on the Kodi side would be willing to create a native player for Emby?

You mean a stripped down version of kodi that functions as a simple video player in android? Like vlc or mxplayer?

That would be interesting indeed. A lot of people would use something like that if it existed, and you could choose it as an external player from any similar app.

Last I heard their team only has one android dev anyway (koying) and while that project would benefit android I doubt the kodi foundation itself would have any use for it whatsoever, thus they wouldn't likely lend any support

I can't wait for this.  A "no transcode"  media playback device for all of my full BD rips plus a client for the upcoming Silicondust DVR software is a clear win.  No WMC "server"  in sight.  I can finally deploy a simple $200 box to all of my TVs and get all of my content with hopefully both the Silicondust DVR software AND Emby server running on my Synology.  Plus some multiplayer gaming added on for the cherry on top.  Super excited.

My thoughts exactly. I was hoping the Razer Forge TV would be that frontend device but the Shield is shaping up to be better value for what you are getting.

Full BD rips probably won't play without at least an on the fly container transcode as that's a generally unsupported format by almost all devices...unless they've committed already to support that.

A container transcode is typically just referred to as a remux

However, (not speaking for deathsquirrel) a lot of people typically refer to their mkv rips as "Full BD rips" and the mkv container has been mostly supported by android devices of late

Yes but it shows in the UI as a transcode session unless it's been changed in the last few builds.  It confuses some folks.

IF you are ripping discs to BDMV folders they almost certainly won't play without some alteration on just about any non-pc client device.  You should definitely consider converting them to MKV which is much, much more likely to be supported by any given device....or MP4 which will run on essentially anything.

The video says the Shield Console will launch on May 5th.  FYI

I wonder if that release date has been pushed back.  I haven't been able to find anywhere else on the interwebs that confirms that release date.  With the 5th being only four days away, seems like you would have heard some sort of an official announcement by now.
