So this is a good sign for future device support:

http://news.xbox.com/2015/04/xbox-one-over-the-air-tuner

Currently, the support is confined to people in the preview program.  The only OTA tuner currently supported is:

Hauppauge

WinTV-HVR-955Q

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr955q.html

Once testing is done, they will be releasing a specially designed version of that tuner for retail sale that will be priced lower than the current price for the 955Q.

The experience is pretty seamless.  The tuner is detected by the Xbox, you go through channel setup and it makes full use of the OneGuide features as well as pausing live tv for up to 30 seconds. The groundwork has been laid for a true dvr solution, MS just needs to add the feature in software, or allow 3rd party apps that can do the same thing.

My hope is that this is just the start of wider tuner support beyond OTA.  If we could get say network tuner support (i.e. silicon dust, ceton, etc.), we could be looking at a more proper WMC replacement. MS just needs to support the hardware via driver updates, then 3rd party apps like Emby can come into play and offer Live TV management beyond the basics. It would be cool if say Silicon Dust and MS worked together to make that an option. I know there are stiff licensing fees involved around cable card support, but maybe it can be done.

I thought I would change the title of this thread so that we could use it as a general thread for all media related news, news about new features, apps etc.

So to start off that new purpose, MS announced today that they are currently working on a DVR app to work with the OTA tuner. It will be released next year. One of the standout features for the app will be the fact that you will be able to access it on any Windows 10 device and recordings made on the X1 can be downloaded to any Win 10 device for offline playback.

If MS allows third party apps to tap into this, maybe Emby can make full use of the X1 tuner as well.

MS also announced improvements to its OneGuide experience along with a few other notable features here:

Getting things like proper picture-in-picture while in OneGuide are really good to see. OneGuide has been shaping up to be a nice upgrade to the old WMC guide experience. Again, I hope developers can tap into this.

Also, MS did announce that the Win 10 update for Xbox would arrive by November, with preview members getting it by September.

Oh and anyone that was worried about not being able to reach your pins quickly, it was mentioned that currently, pressing RT will take you to them.

Maybe they will do this for Windows 10 as well since they have ended TV support in Windows 10.

Technically they could but a big reason to do it for the xbox is to make the device more attractive, because as soon as you have the device they can put quite a bit other paid content right in front of you. There is less incentive for them to do it for PC's, but who knows, maybe they will anyway because they're showing a lot more flexibility now than ever before.

Keep in mind that MS is all about supporting alternative to cable. They threw in the cable box support at launch since there were no alternatives for most users, but MS is trying to add support for any alternative, such as Sling TV and the OTA tuner.

I wouldn't be shocked at all if MS leaves third party driver support in the Windows 10 X1 update. Something to allow third party accessories to be used, say even a cable card tuner, at least networked.
