Emby for Kodi - Remote Access

I have some questions concerning path substitution and Emby for kodi.

I tried the new Emby for kodi plugin.

At first I could not get to work properly, the plugin was always telling me that the video was not found, like in the 1st screenshot.

I then realized that the path in the movie information was a path on my server not on my client in the 2nd screenshot.

Then I proceeded to modify the path substitution to add smb://<server name>  and it worked. Is that the way it should work because it limits my plugin inside my home network. Since samba and server name is not the same outside of my network.

Is there a way to "enable" it to work with http streaming instead of samba ?

Samba also adds a  lot of overhead bandwidth wise.

I would prefer to specify my protocol like http ftp or nfs for that. Is there a way to do it ?

Thanks for your help

Remote access doesn't work with this plugin yet

Ok thanks.

Is path substitution the best way to deal with the plugin ?

Ok thanks.

Either that or use UNC directly for the library :) either works just fine!

So.... there is an OpenVPN Plugin for Kodi...

http://brianhornsby.com/kodi_addons/openvpn

So in theory.... you could use that plugin to connect via VPN, and then Kodi should be able to playback.  The question though, is if the stream is too much for playback, would it fall back to transcoding?

It is actually a great idea. I do have a 50mb/s connection so bandwidth should not be an issue. I mostly keep my movies under 8gb

Samba + VPN = Disaster for streaming

I am really looking forward for http playback with the new plugin

Over a low quality connection, sure.  But in the past I was able to VPN in from work and play back DVD's without issue.

Even now, from the office I set up an SSH tunnel, using proxy forwarding to send all Firefox traffic through the tunnel, and playback my movies there.  Sure I'm not using 40Mbps, but that is mainly because the office doesn't have the bandwidth.  With his movies being 8GB or less I bet it would most likely work.  Specially if he has the upstream speeds.

Needs HTTP support before the plugin is useful for me,

Shame because it looks like a lovely plugin, but my media server isn't on the same network as my clients and I have no desire to allow Samba over the internet.

Play over HTTP possibly fixed on Github. If you want to try it, I don't know when the next build will be posted on the repo.

I don't think a rescan is needed. Once you enable the option Play HTTP instead of SMB, restart Kodi and then it should start changing your paths in your database to http instead of smb. If you have a really large library, give it a couple of minutes. You can test the playback and let me know. :)

Remember that the normal background scan is much slower than first scan, so if you have a big library, best to just reset.

I just got done installing the github version to try out. HTTP is working great on it so far. :)

And it changed the paths pretty quickly? It should show in your logs.

It was a fresh install of the addon, so not sure how long it took to change the paths alone. What would I look for exactly in the logs?

It took about 4 minutes to process 9 movies and 1154 episodes from the fresh install to finish, if that's any indication. They were playable right away. The log file is pretty large. lol

Ok, no it's all good. I thought you might have tried letting your database update. You should be able to toggle between the two options currently. After a Kodi restart, your database will update to take into account that change. :)

Ok, so I decided to do a fresh install without enabling HTTP, to test the speed of the path changes. Started at 05:45:26, and ended at 05:46:56.

Not bad at all for 1163 files. Also, I didn't have to restart at all. It all started immediately when the options were set. :)

Thanks Angelblue for the help,

It was one/both of the following

1) I hadn't setup path substitution, I believed it wasn't needed as I'm not using Samba/CIFS but it seems to break things even for the http streaming for some reason.

2) My Firetv is running 14.1 not 14.2, I'll get this updated when I get a chance, tested with 14.2 on a PC and got it working.

What's a good way to ensure it's coming over via HTTP when testing locally?

What's odd too is while playing files via either SMB or HTTP, it was no longer showing in the server as the client being active?

It works pretty great thank you.

I can now use Kodi on my mac while away instead of the webui which is always transcoding and my server is not powerful enough.

This is a life saver thank you for your quick response :).

I just updated to the GitHub zip (0.9.825) because the Kodi repo version (0.9.764) was always saying incorrect username/password.

on 825 there is no password field on the MediaBrowser tab any longer and I get the same message.

Am I missing something? I selected "HTTP instead of SMB"

Running Kodi 14.2 on android 4.2.2 and win7x64

Please start a new thread. This thread is about the new Emby for Kodi addon. Not the Mediabrowser addon. Also post a log. See my signature if you need help with that. Thanks :)

Thanks, with the name change I am still kind of associating them together. I have switched addons (Emby 0.0.27 now)

Giving this one a try now.

UPDATE: tried the Emby addon also. Authentication issue persists. I know it is the right password because I am using the same account for my EMBY android app and app.emby.media and I have typed it in a few times in case of typo.

Attached the kodi.log

You are not using the correct username. You need to use your user name found on your Emby server. Not the Emby Connect/forums username. Try it, and let me know! :)

Edit: The error message will be adjusted eventually to reflect the real situation.
