LAV Filters with AVI & BitStreaming

Been having an issue for a while now while trying to play many AVi files in MBC.  Often when I click play on certain AVIs it tries to play and then I am immediately returned to the item page.  

 

I tried to do some more analysis about what was happening today and found that when playing through WMP it will play the video file but it won't play the audio.

 

So I uninstalled/reinstalled LAV filters and it started to work on both WMP and MBC (WMC).  But this was because it wiped out all of my configuration.  When I went to turn back on bitstreaming it stopped working once again.

 

If I uncheck bitstreaming for AC3 all of the issues go away - but then it doesnt bitstream my MKV files which make up 95% of my collection.

 

Has anyone run into this issue before?  Does anyone have LAV with bitstreaming working for AVIs with AC3 audio codecs?  Is there some way I can disable bitstreaming for AVIs in LAV but leave it on for MKVs?

 

Sorry I know this isn't specific to MBC but wasnt sure what other forum it belonged in.

Hi moviefan, I have seen this  on my setup when I tried (twice) to go LAV only. Either MKV's don't play at all or I lose audio in my avi with bitstreaming. Like you, I tried multiple ways to config the lav codecs, but couldn't resolve this. So I downloaded shark007's Standard codec pack which is lav only-ish. I used the suggested settings (check box) and now everything works like it should. But you still have to enable bitstreaming in the x64 codec.

I use spdif for connecting my audio to my AVR fyi

Thanks for the suggestion about Shark's software.

 

I used to use his software a while ago but after he bundled an extremely persistent browser hijacker into the installer that wasn't even presented as an option I have sworn never to download it again.

 

I know I can just install ffdshow to handle AVI playback but was really just trying to determine if someone in here had an LAV only fix.  Sounds like you are stuck in the same boat as me.  I figured with it now being the default codec that MBT installs people must have run into this issue before.

 

My other option is just determining which AVIs I have that are using AC3 audio and convert all of those to MKV.  I think most of my AVIs are stereo sound and those seem to playback just fine.

I know what you mean about the add on crap at install with the shark codec packs. I stopped using them for the same reason, but his installer now has the option of not installing that garbage.

You could try the Codec Tweak Tool if you haven't already. My setup uses WMC with MBC3. All I have installed is the LAV codecs (Audio, Video, Splitter) and AVI files containing AC3 play normally when bitstreaming AC3 through HDMI.

Pretty much my setup was as follows. It should be noted that I pretty much ignored the 32bit options, as this PC is just set up as a HTPC, and I have made a registry change to force WMP to run the 64bit version rather than the 32bit version. I found this made setting up and testing easier, as then the playback results I could see quickly by just playing the file in WMP would be reflected in WMC.

• Uninstalled ffmpeg and Haali (that's what I had been using)

  Installed MBS, MBC

• Installed LAV

• Run Codec Tweak Tool (run as administrator)

• Fixes button, Apply&Close, and accepted any fixes it displayed

• DirectShow (x64) button, disabled any listed as broken, Apply&Close

• Preferred Splitters button, set everything to recommended, Apply&Close

• Preferred Decoders button, hit reset, everything to recommended or USE MERIT where available, both AAC options to use LAV, Apply&Close

• Media Foundation button, disabled for all formats listed, Apply&Close

Dunno if you'd need to perform all those things, but that was just how I set up my system and I don't have a problem with AVIs. It should be noted that I haven't long ago set it up this way, so there might be other issues that I haven't yet come across.

 

Something else that caught me out during this setup was that for some reason, Windows had decided that my AV Receiver only supported 2 channels. I had to go into the Playback Devices menu (from the volume right click menu) and configure it as 5.1 channels.

I used to run Shark007, but after a clean Win7 install I went LAV only. I find MKVs work best like you.

 

I would just use MakeMKV (free for now) to convert your avi to MKV

 

If you have a ton of avi then Handbrake (also free) can batch convert to MKV

Agree, I'd try converting to MKV before trying different codecs.  You can run into bigger problems with that if certain codecs don't get uninstalled properly.  I had this issue with one AVI file I had and I just converted and was fine.

I've had the same thing and I solved it by unchecking AC3 in the LAV Filters > Audio config > Formats tab. It still bitstreams AC3 fine.

Thank you for that find. I convert to LAV filter about 4 month ago and just last week hit a movie that was in AVI format. My Win 7 64 bit machine would play it but my HTPC, a Win 7 32 Bit machine wouldn't. You suggestion saved me from converting over 200 movie.

Just had the same problem ...did what danswan said and it resolved the issue.
