Emby Server 3.0.5781.4 Released

Luke

4718 views

A small update to the previous release has gone out, with several fixes and one notable new feature. Here are the highlights.

Encoding with Intel Quick Sync is Here!

There's a lot of great changes going on in our dev branch. Seriously, if you have a system to spare for testing, you should think about joining in on the fun. Quick Sync encoding has been sitting in dev for a while and we're excited to finally bring it to you. Please note - we're still considering this experimental and it is not yet supported on all operating systems. It's currently limited to Windows and select Linux releases.

To try it out, just enable it in the server dashboard. Important: Your setting for hardware decoding has now been reset and merged into one hardware acceleration setting.

This feature has been previously exposed to a limited test audience and we don't expect it will be perfect just yet. If you run into any issues, please let us know.

Other Changes

  • Fix password reset function bouncing users back to the login screen
  • Update tvdb to support lookup using Imdb id
  • Update live tv user data
  • Update live tv recording engine
  • Fix fanart downloading banners as season posters
  • Reduce size of http request logging
  • Update Kodi dlna profile to handle more subtitle formats
  • Update auto-organize to handle null episode title
  • Update all translations

Would it be possible to provide some sort of indication that a video is being transcoded using QuickSync rather than the CPU?

Maybe changing the transcoding bar from red to blue in the 'Active Devices' view?

Guys.. you call this a small release, I beg to differ.  This is a HUGE release adding this feature!  I've been worried about transcoding on my FireTV and other devices with Live TV streams due to CPU stress, this has squelched all those fears.  I am able to transcode on several devices at once, and the quality is exceptional!  Way beyond what I was experiencing before this release.  Excellent job!  For example before I had to do a 10 mbit encode to match the quality I am now getting with a 3 mbit encode.  It's really incredible!  Keep up the good work.

I honestly don't know the answer to that question. I imagine you will need up to date video drivers.

Maybe I missed something. I have QSV enailed but I'm still seeing libx264 in my transcode logs when I play Live TV on my android tablet with the Emby for Android app?

Right now it's just for media files as we ran into some issues using it with live tv. in time i'm sure that will improve.

I know there's google but maybe you should include a description of that Intel Quick Sync is and how does it benefit Emby users, for the newbies like me? :-)

What is it required to enjoy this? do I need a special video card or something?

I'm running into the same issue as the 3.0.5781.2 update, the server recognizes there is an update but when I click the Update Now button it doesn't do anything.  The server log shows that it is checking for application updates when I click the button but it doesn't actually do anything.

Adding QS is a HUGE improvement, it is a major step in Emby development!

Is it available for Ubuntu Server 15.x at the moment?

LiveTV is not done via QS yet, if I got this correctly. But it will be possible to do?

Thanks for the great work!

Hi Lumute.. QuickSync is a great step forward because it will allow you to use this feature on certain Intel series CPU/Processors, which means overall it will greatly reduce the load that your CPU normally has to handle while transcoding video files if you are able to use it in Emby. Essentially what happens is the Intel CPU will transcode the video on a special part of its hardware that is reserved just for this purpose, rather than using up the "normal" processor cores.

The GPU equivalent of this would be something like Nvidia's NVENC technology, if you have ever heard of that. (This is what allows Nvidia GPUs to use the "Shadowplay" feature). Something to note is that Quicksync typically has to be re-enabled if you have a dedicated graphics card. This is because your CPU's onboard graphics are usually disabled by default if you have a dedicated graphics card. Once you have your CPU's onboard graphics enabled (either by itself or alongside your dedicated GPU), you should be able to use QuickSync if your CPU supports it.

OMG!!! Did I read correctly? "...and select Linux releases" I have been trying to compile ffmpeg with quick sync support in Ubuntu. On what "select Linux releases" does this feature is available? I will change release in a hearbeat 8)

Since atm moment I'm running a server without QSV, I' can't try it for myself. Can somebody confirm that Emby is working on Ubuntu with QSV? If yes, I will migrate to my new server where I have QSV support.

No it wont work because the ffmpeg that is shipped with emby can not use the quicksync library libmfx at the moment. I dont know when they will include this lib in the ffmpeg. I also dont know which system instat of windows will run with quick sync
